I seem to remember when the ML was launched they were all made in America. Then to increase capacity and address demand outside the US a line was opened at the Steyr plant in Austria, these vehicles I think have a better reputation for build quality (don't ask me how from the same parts!).

Does this help?

if you do a search for "VIN" on the internet, there are plenty of sites that tell you how to decode the VIN numbers. I think that if the number starts with "W", that's germany (don't know for Austria) and I think that the US is digits "1","2","3" or "4". The next letter will probably be "D" for "Daimler-Chrysler".

unfortunately i have not yet bought a car from there but i hope to soon. They are some distance away but their prices are excellent and they do have a ****** good range e.g. db7, s/clk/slk/e, jag, range rover etc. helps me to get a feel for prices too, just dont expect rock bottom mileage unless stated.

Piestore,

Didn't you see my post about the Austrian plant? I had a feeling the 270s are built there - any ideas?

I only thought it fair to point out that Toady is being rather conservative with his answer on this one.

Toady has been handing out advice rather freely recently and before someone takes his advice too literally, I think it only fair that Toady comes clean on this matter (like he has on other groups) so everyone can move on.

Over to you Toady/Obe1/tobyroland........

PS. The Sig needs to go too m8

Piestore,

In answer to your question, the ML was originally only built in southern USA. More recently, as Ricahrd says, MB decided to produce the ones for Europe at a plant in Graz, Austria (formerly Styr Daimler Puch, but now part of the Magna empire), where they built the G-Wagens and now also the Jeep Cherokee (Daimler Chrysler). It's a very specialised plant with a long history in 4x4, 4x6 etc vehicles and the quality of fit and finish is said to be better than the US ones, which were originally supplied to the UK with the trip computer reading in US gallons!

Toady,

I did take a look at Bensons and thet DB7 is really nice. However, while prices on their more down-to-earth Mercs and Beemers are about £3k to £4K less than dealers, their milages are all very high. If you look at the Merc website for used cars you can also find similar priced cars with similarly high mileage. Bensons are therfore a little misleading in that they compare their price for high-mileage cars with a dealer's price for a low-mileage/nearly new car.

I spoke to bensons on Friday regarding an estate and the chap admitted that their prices are not really cheap.
