Hi all, i noticed last week while getting on 2 new rear tyres that my rear brake pads were worn to the limit, which i was suprised :eek:as theres only 35k on the car. I want to change them myself and was wondering is there anything i need to know before i start or any special tools needed? Thanks , Damian

The 211 has SBC brakes that are charged up and live through the wake up circuit even when the engine is off. on early 211's there are 2 batteries, and these must be disconnected,on later cars only one, and this must be disconnected. the Brake pedal must be pushed up to 20 times to discharge any pressure in the lines.

From this point on they are the same as non SBC brakes

The rear calipers have to be removed off the hub to change the pads.
Remove the rubber bungs on the stand pipes and insert a 7mm hex key and undo and withdraw the 2 screws,30 in the link, and you will need something to rest the caliper on as it must not hang on the brake hose.

You need to re tract the pistons either with a clamp or what I do as the pads are no good anyway is to use a large flat screw driver before taking the calipers off and lever them back.

You must change the sensor wire as it is the 2 wire type.

grease the back of the pads with copper paste and put them back.
Re connect batteries and start the car, press the brake pedal a couple of times and thats the job done.

The windows and roof will need re setting. hold each window up for 10 sec in key 2 and the same for the roof and job done apart from the ESP lamp, just turn the steering 3 times from lock to lock

Its normally better to open the bleed screws when pushing the pistons back but with SBC its better just to push back.

Keep an eye on the top up tank to be sure that it does not overflow

Think Malc has just about covered it all!!

We got these down to 5min a side (while having tea) but we dont bother taking the battery off!! we just take the key out, keep the doors shut and dont wake the car up!

BUT dont do this, follow Malcs way, if not, you could lose a finger or worse!!

... ESP lamp, just turn the steering 3 times from lock to lock

Put a couple of shiny magasines under the front wheels when you do this and you will save additional stress on steering and tyres.

I always use a small syringe to lower the master cylinder level before using a g clamp to push back the caliper pistons. Once the new pads are fitted and calipers back on, I can pump the pedal and invariably put some of the fluid back in. This obviously saves disturbing any bleed nipples.
