Does anyone know the best way to change a steering wheel on a w202 c class ?

I want to replace my steering wheel as at the top of the wheel the outer casing feels loose ( high milage car!) around the inner, I have been offered a one off a much lower milage car that feels much better (same model) but I am concearned about the airbag etc, I dont want to risk it not working for obvious reasons.

Any help would be much apreciated

Many Thanks

See this thread for steering wheel removal. http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=14136&highlight=steering+wheel
However, I had the same problem and with the help of a GP friend, acquired an old fashioned hypodermic and needle (I don't recommend you have a rake around your local park! :)), put in the contents of a tube of superglue and injected this through the spongy cover in a couple of places - sorted. Don't know how long it will last, but that was a couple of months ago now.

No 1 the battery must be disconected and you wait 15 mins before work near any air bag. You must then have the code for the radio.
I will try and find the correct info for removing the wheel later in the day.

Removing steering wheels with airbags is one of those jobs where if you have to ask how you should probably take it to a garage.

Aside from usually needing a few specialised tools there is a very real chance of serious injury if you don't do things to the letter.

Hi R129,

I know what you are saying but I really don't see why I cant do it myself with the correct instructions and tools, I just don't want to be ripped off by a main dealer £100 per hour is just ridiculous, I understand extreme caution is needed.

Malcome yes I will do it myself if you can write the instuctions to the letter, don't worry I totaly understand it's at my own risk, if I am not confident I can do it I will not.

Many Thanks

Disconnect battery insulate cable or take Batt out of car. wait 15mins.

air bag;special tool, 126 589 00 10 00 looks like standard torx to me, remove two screws one each side. Disconnect the wires, store bag in a place not exceeding 100 degrees deployment side up.

Put key in lock and engage steering lock with wheel pointing ahead and remove key.
Unscrew center bolt while holding the wheel tight. undo any multi function connectors. Lift off wheel.

New wheel; align recesses of the splines in the wheel with the markings on the steering shaft(arrow)
Fit new bolt in center and tighten to 80nm.
Refit any multi function connectors then refit Air bag, reconnect battery,
that's it I have done it lots of times as I like fancy steering wheels.
