My 300TE-24 was on 430K when that woman came through my garden wall and wrote it off . The car was on its second engine - the original unit lasted to 380K at which point it was replaced due to high oil consumption . The invoice for over 6K was shown to me by MB Glasgow , who had supplied the car and looked after it for the one previous owner . The car ran like new , despite the mileage , because it had never wanted for anything being done .

One commonly hears of diesel engines reaching these mileages , but not so often petrol engines like the M104 above .

Impressive as it is to have 475000 on the clock, but that doesn't answer the exam question. You could have had 5 or 10 engines in that mileage. I'm not saying you have, but the clock doesn't tell you diddly squat.

It depends on how well you look after your engine. I have had one M104 3.2Ltr engine with 315000 on the clock and my own personal estate (E280) has 215000 on the clock. Both start first time every time. No rattles, 2.5 bar oil pressure when hot and still 27 mpg. On the other hand, just had a 110000 mile C180 in with a blown engine because it had not been regularly serviced. The head was looking like a diesel with blowing injectors, just so much burnt oil.
