I have recently returned back to Mercedes after a mid life crisis buying Subaru Impreza's....they were fun but uncomfortable.

I recently looked at a 54 plate E320 CDi but it had 110,000 miles. The car had all the gadgets you could think of but I was concerned at the high mileage. Should I have been? How long will these V6 diesels last if serviced correctly? It was cheap, well seemed cheap to me at £10.5K.

In the end I went for a C320 CDi, more money but a lot fewer miles. The car seems every bit as quick as a Subaru and a joy to drive. I never thought I would own a diesel automatic but it's great.

I went through exactly he same thing last year, bought a subaru wrx with prodrive pack, awsome car to drive but ****** uncomfortable and drank super unleaded like there was no tommorrow.finally saw sense and bought a proper car in the form of a mercedes s 320 cdi, never looked back since and wondered why i didn't buy one in the first place.

The straight 6 and V6 CDI engines properly looked after, filter change and realy good quality oil, it is possible to attain in the region of 500k miles.
The E Class you mention was only just run in. Most of the time you will only have 2000 RPM on the rev counter, compare that to your Scuby and you will see why the CDI lasts longer, there is also the fact that diesel is a lubricant.
No doubt your drivers license is a bit more secure these days as well.

Had a ride in an immaculate 70s 200 taxi in Spain a few years back with nearly a million Km on the clock !

as above the mileage shouldn't be a problem. Mine is 'low' at only 67k but she's still running in really.
The E on a 54 plate would have been a straight 6 engine whereas your C is the newer V6 (straight 6 didn't fit into the C). The V6 is smoother and more powerful though mabe a little less proven at this stage. Still good for silly mileages I imagine. We had a cavalier with over 220k on it. The body was shot (felt so floppy it was like driving around in an paper bag) but the engine was still sweet!

The Volvo in my signature starts on the button every day (apart from when the crank position sensor had muck on it one day), doesn't leak or burn oil. Not bad for £300. Clearly, its previous life has been on motorways because the merc, at nearly 100K less, is far tattier and I know thats had a lot of stop start in its previous life.

My point is, it depends on what kind of driving has made up the miles and at what point do economics take precedence in the financing of the car.

I'm definitely going to see how many I can get from the Volvo before it carks out....
