Maybe a strange question, but looking on a website that tells you how to change the spark plugs it says top and bottom plugs. Does this mean that there are 6? Or is the position on different engines?

is it a 450? If so, it has 6 .... 2 per pot. The top plugs are easy to get to .... the lower 3 are not so easy

Trouble with those is that if they need new Plugs they generally need a new engine! By the way, yes, 6. And you'll need a suction pump to drain the Oil.
Why is that then. Seems a bit OTT. Plugs are a service item on nearly every car I have seen. So why a new engine?

Exactly. All 6 plugs are changed every other service as a service item. If they aren't you can get exhaust valves burning but that's still not a new engine.

When I did the first service on mine number 1 lower plug had clearly not been changed for a very long time and most of the electrode had been eroded. Nearly 40k miles on and it's still in the same engine.

I have a suction pump, but can't it just be dropped out the bottom?

Next question. How many spark plugs on a 2016 Smart Car?
Also with so many to choose from, which would you fit?

The 451 Smart only has 3 ie 1 per pot ... I'd guess that the 453 also just has 3 too. OE for my 451 petrol turbo are iridium so they can have an extended service life & I'd suspect that OE are also iridium for the same reason.
Sometimes it's easier to go to the dealer .... you know you're paying more than you need to, but you also know that they'll supply the correct plugs ;)
