I am replacing the A6 compressor and receiver dryer with new units in my 1977 450 SLC. Could someone tell me what the total oil quantity in the system should be? The new compressor contains 10 ounces some of which must be drained and added to the receiver dryer so that the total equals the factory recommended quantity but I don't know what that is. Any help would be most appreciated. I am using mineral oil and R12 freon.
Thanks,

Excuse me saying this but before you can refil the AC the system must be dried out, it is a specialist job, no way can you do this without the drying test unit that tells you when dried.

Malcolm,
Thank you for your note of caution. Before I can have the system evacuated and dried out I need to reinstall all the individual parts like the compressor and receiver dryer. But they need to have oil in them first so my question is how much oil. Its been suggested that about 8 ounces in the compressor and about 3 or 4 ounces in the receiver dryer would be about right. But those amounts, I believe, must add up to the quantity that Mercedes specifies for the whole A/C system for my old 450 SLC and that is what I'm trying to find out.

the oil in A/C is added by the charging unit, it is added in with the gas, normally in a/c systems the amount of oil is very small. clean it all out and then get them to add it with the gas
too much oil will blow the compressor apart - thid happened where i work
