Thanks, that does help. I did mean to say I don't intend to go to a main dealer. I have been quoted £345 including gear box oil change and brake fluid, at my local mechanics garage!

My local MB dealer charges a fixed price of £320 for a B service and you get free updates and MobiloLife free breakdown cover. Cheaper for older cars and if you bring your own oil.

So that's £650 with the ATF and brake fluid change.

Free updates? Ha. A 2003 W203 is going to need loads of those. Not.

MobiloLife? Limited coverage. Many people have proper breakdown cover available from other sources anyway.

.

Neither are part of the B service and can be done elsewhere if you wish.

In my experience Mobilo is better than other breakdown services: it covers any driver (the AA want £150 for me and wife). it ensures I get towed to an MB dealer if anything goes wrong -not Joe Soaps garage- and it covers trips to Europe at no extra charge (the AA want another £100 for that).

There's some dispute about that.

The cover reduces as the car gets older (as the OPs is). And the AA cover for you and your wife would cover both of you in any car. For the same as Mobilo you only need cover the car itself as that's all Mobilo covers (unlike Lexus's cover, which covers the owner in any vehicle).

Many garages give free breakdown cover with servicing now anyway - the actual cost is negligible.

Really? Haven't seen any round here. And if the cost is so "negligible" why do the AA want £150 for me and wife plus another £100 for Europe?

There must be risk factors taken into account that we don't know about. My AA cover is free (Lloyd's Bank) and worked a treat on the only occasion I needed it (flat battery). And it covers me or spouse in whatever car we might be travelling.

Both our local Honda and Mitsubishi dealers advertised it, but as part of their £99 service special deals, not the normal manufacturer servicing. The Honda dealer gave us free HondaCare on our 5yr old Jazz, apparently available simply for the asking - pity they hadn't mentioned that the previous year! It's pan-european for the car, but it does have the same sort of limitations as Mobilo.

Someone posted on here about a Mercedes dealer group offering free RAC cover and that it could be transferred to another car if the car being serviced was covered by Mobilo.

If it's like the fleet policies then these things are essentially free - they pay per use.

£150 is silly. We had the Jazz covered any driver using Brittania Rescue for the full cover (home, recovery etc) for £70.

Hawk20-I got free breakdown cover with stratstone but am with the AA. Most breakdown services will take you to either an indie or a main dealer, they'd ask you 1st and if they don't tell them you want to take the car there if its a dealer you want the car taken to.

The AA have a far greater number of breakdown vehicles on the road at any one time and as such are more likely to get to you sooner than MB Mobilo can. I think its worth £40/YR and given its uptake in the UK so do many others.

As we've seen here MB dealers do differ massively in quality (some are good some not so good) there are chances that where you break down you could be taken to a bad MB dealer. i.e. breakdown in Cambs. and its off to Robinsons :(

Hawk

I have never relied on MB for breakdown service preferring to have services of Norwich Union (operated by RAC on behalf of Norwich Union)where I have been for more than ten years- upgraded two days ago to personal cover including Europe for £115 - this covers me in any vehicle and also riding my motorcycles - great value for money as getting breakdown cover for motorcycles is an expensive game.

Not quite "free" though as you must pay about £8.95 a month to Lloyds for the account? Still at £108 a year and if you use any of the other "benefits" the bank "gives" you it could be worth it.

MB main dealer wanted £440 for B service on my C class, local garage £230 using genuine parts....£60 extra for plugs..£440 to change oil and look at car, which is all a B service is.
