Hi folks...

I have an L reg E220, auto... I was wondering if anyone had any idea how much it might cost to get re-sprayed? The body-work has a couple of blisters and I want these fixed too. I don't have a clue how much I should be prepared to pay for this, any idea?

its hard to say because you could get a cheap job done and a very expensive one, its worth driving round other places to get quotes then chose the one that suits your wallet

A good respray could cost you the best part of a grand depending on the bodywork.

Hi,
there are are a number factors that will affect the overall cost.

If you want to change the colour this will send the price though the roof as to do it right means stripping the all fittings and interior so that every visible area of the car can be covered...

Some bodyshops will tell you that you need to strip the paint back to bare metal, While others will say that a rough sanding will do the job as it will act as a good base coat. (hint if your car is silver this is better as it acts as a good base to spray other colours on top of).

The best shops to use are small ones as they will not be forced into using water based paint yet. ( I just had my mk3 MR2 resprayed to remove front stone chips. I was almost in tears when it came back as the solvent finish was so good in comparison to the rubbish that Toyota chucked on...)

It is also worth finding one that uses a double MS system (this means that they apply many small coats instead of one large one) This is also better as it makes the paint less likley to chip. But it might cost more.

Any serious bodyshop will have an oven to cook the paintwork but it's worth checking that they use it!!!

I have some stone chips on my car and I was talking to a man that I use for minor repairs and he has also suggested that I could look at plastarising the front paintwork as an altenative as this can also stop stone chipping. aparently the french use this technique alot on their cars and it works well...

I would expect to pay between £1000 and £2000 for a respray maybe more if you have special needs...

The best way to find a body shop is not by price.
Ideally you want somone that has been in the same place for 10 years +, as this shows that they must be doing something right, and also in the event that something goes wrong a year down the line the car will be rectified. I have a technique that I have used with a few people and it is quite simple...

Most bodyshops will puff and bluster about how good they are :) let them! then when it comes to the part of the chat when you talk about warranty on the work, you just say somthing like " well you are obviously so good at your work, it seems easy for you to offer a 1 year warranty so why don't we make it 5 !!!" If your man won't go for it it is a very clear indication of what standard his work is really is up to. From this you can of course negotiate what they will cover for the time but it is important to get more than 1 year warranty.

Another tip

Most shops will blend paint front to the back of the car and then show you the car so that you look from the front to the back of the car as this should hide a multitude of sins. if you really want to know what the work is up to, then go stand or squat down at the back of the car and look down the car from various angles .... (this realy is not fair to the bodyshop as they have to lose the work somehow, but you can see the quality of the work. ) Give some leaway but if it looks awful, show them and explain that it needs rectifiying.

The best bodywork will stand up to this test even under a streetlamp or carpark lights, the bad stuff will just look a totaly different colour :-(

If you can get a recommendation from someone else this is best as you can stand there and look at the work a few months on. I tried to get some info from my insurance company and they where no use and told me that if I wanted that info I needed to make a claim !!!!

Hope this helps :) Good luck

FWIW, I was getting various quotes from £1k up to £5k for a complete back to metal respray.

I ended up driving the car to Eastern Europe, getting it completely stripped down, (windows out etc) made good and resprayed with original MB paint for about a grand.

IMO, well worth the 2500 mile round trip :)

I was on holiday in Croatia and got speaking with some car enthusiasts that recommended someone. I ended up leaving the car for 3 weeks and flying home.

wow 8) looks like new

LOL,

Better than new :)

I'll try and dig out the paperwork and get the details. The only problem is that the owner of the premesis speaks zero English. An interpreter will be required.

Resprays on average will cost from £400. try and get a few quotes first It will be more expensive if it is metalic paint.
 Is the number 1 key not working on your keyboard ? Resprays are expensive now it would probably cost £400 to spray one side. I recon 1t would cost about £1,000 to £1500 for a good respray.

>Landrover £400 for a complete respray??? I know you Scots like a bargain but its a real full sized car we are talking about here & not making something made by matchbox a fancy pearlescent.

So long as you're happy with it, who cares. Be interesting to find someone in this country who could do a paint job like the one on your motor for £1,000. Maybe 500sl knows someone...............?

Re-spray

Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone, especially peterchurch for his concise post...

It seems like a massive can of worms this and I think I'll put it on hold for a while and look into it before jumping.

On the basis of the posts, I can expect to pay somewhere between 400 and 3000 quid

As for going to Eastern Europe... ehhhhh it sounds like a high risk strategy... those guys started the first world war  the job they did looks amazing though...
