How Often Should Plugs and Air filters be changed?

Anyone know when in mileage terms these should be changed as I believe these are additional to A or B service? This is for a E class.

Im sure the filters get done at 40,000 and im not sure about the plugs.

My cars last service was July 2002 and was a A Service carried out by Whitefield Mercedes Manchester.
My car at the time was 3 years 4 months old with 50,000 miles and even after that service acording to the service book was running on original factory spark plugs and air filter.
I'm hoping at my next service(B) these items will be changed.
I took my air filter out myself though the other week and hoovered it and the air box :wink:
