First car was a 1962 Landrover series 2a Long Wheel base Safari 2.2 Diesel (54bhp 2.3 tonnes). It was 10 years older than me! Known as Rigby (reg was 230 ELR - Elanor Rigby). I kept it 15 years, and wish I still had it today! In all probability it is still going - swapped it for 100 hours of welding work on a house boat

No power breaks (drums alround), no power steering, no syncro on 1st and 2nd gear - you really had to drive that car, stopping quickly was a challenge. However, I learned alot about rebuilding engines, gear box, suspension etc.

Had a great time with Rigby - this was the ultimate party mobile for a teenager, 3 seats in the front, 4 on the back seat, 4 on the benches in the boot - I guess that it was also much safer than a metro or Polo etc. At its peak, I was doing 10,000miles a year... very slowly

Matt

Sounds like my SIII I have at the moment, see attached, does 30 on the flat and 45 down hill!!!, 30 is fast enough!!! it has charm though.

Hi All

I had a succession of motorbikes before moving onto my first car, a Morris Mini 850. I've not owned many cars because I prefer to get my monies worth out of them. I bought my first Mercedes at the age of 54 and, like all the others, I could be keeping this car for a good few years.

I've driven many dozens of other makes 'on business' but only a handful were memorable. One of my last hire cars was a brand new C200 Auto. It was this car that persuaded me to put MB on my shortlist for my next car.

I bought my first merc about 10 years ago after a long successsion of big Volvo estates . Very soon both the wife and myself realsed our derriers were not suited to teutonic car seats and we very quickly went back to Volvo`s.
Now Mercedes have made concessions to more sensitive parts we are back and love them.

Got my C220CDI sports coupe 2 years ago at 54, on the back of over 1 million miles driving since I was 17. First car Fiat 500, 0-60 of infinity (max speed 59) - bought as re build from a write-off, all I could afford. Best car to date Audi Coupe GT, had it for 14 years and 392000 miles, untouched engine and gearbox (but quite a bit of white smoke on the overrun and 1000 miles per pint of oil at the end). I hope the Merc will better this. 115000 miles so far, long way to go.

I never even as much as considered a Merc until I was in my late 30's.

In fact a mate of mine got one when I was in my early 30's and I took the p**s unrelentingly for getting an "old man's car". He was the only person I new with one and I really could not understand why he had chosen a Merc.

I love then now but when I was younger they didn't appeal at all.

I see the under-30's are in the minority. There always used to be this traditional idea that "older" people drove Mercedes but i thought that had all changed

i got my fist Merc at 21 W202 and still have it, although my wife drives it now and does not give it the care it needs, but im in a R129 now.
I think that you get to know so many people that are related to the marque its difficult to change and start all over again with the networking.

Just worth noting that the question is how old are you now. That gives a different answer than a poll that asks how old were you when you bought your first Mercedes.

You could find the average age of poll responders was, say, 50 and you might be tempted to conclude from that, that older people buy Mercedes. But it could be that, although responders were of average age 50, they nonetheless bought their first Mercedes when much younger.

In a country with a fairly constant population total, there would be roughly the same number of potential buyers in each 5 year band. Unfortunately the 56-65 band is twice the size of most others (10 years instead of 5) so the high figure in that band is due to the size of the band not that older people buy more Mercs.

Another interesting feature, is how small the number is from 66 upwards. Since many live and drive into their eighties this band should contain 3 or 4 times the number of owners of 'normal' sized bands. But it doesn't. So it looks like the overwhelming majority of retired folk cannot afford Mercedes -or could it be that once they are buying with their own money (rather than getting a company car or at least a tax deductible car, they choose to buy something less expensive?

The biggest 5 year group is in mid life when successful people probably get offered a company car. A poll on that would be interesting.

I just got my first Merc 3 weeks ago and I'm 28 years old. Not the youngest but not the oldest either ;)
