Ahh, that is interesting. I knew of such things but was not aware that is what they were called. There were a couple of guys on Dragon's Den who had come up with a disposable one

My God, hawk 20, that sketch and description bring back a few memories!

In winter those shelters were brass chimp freezing...especially if you were a six year old dragged out of a nice, warm bed at two in the ****** morning. You went into them with most of your blankets wrapped around you and, if your mum was prescient enough, thermos flasks of tea and a potty!

They were always damp, smelling of wet concrete, and you shared them with the occasional hedgehog, thousands of insects and the odd, stray, flea ridden cat. But you really did feel safe in them.

Our house (Near Croydon) was very badly damaged a couple of times, and I can remember the shrapnel pinging off the huge zink coal box we'd put in front of the shelter door. Then always the following morning queueing cheerfully for tar paper and laths at the local school to nail up over the non-existent windows.

Some of this had its compensations for a kid. After one very big air raid, I was out collecting shrapnel and came across an unexploded incendiary bomb on a local (unused) golf course.

I brought it home and we had it on the mantelpiece till the end of the war, when to my great joy, I discovered it wasn't a dud and let it off in a field with my mates.

I'm a trifle less adventurous these days, I have to say.

Wow! Can I overcome the oncoming dementia!

A 67 Mini followed by a an MG Midget (bright yellow, got my aged auntie in, but a pain to get her out!)

Fords - Escorts, Cortinas & Granada's - too many to recall and too many head gaskets to count!

(something in-between but can't recall)

2 x Renault 18 Turbos - a great car when it worked - v. early electronics (valves!)

A few rusty Nissans followed by my first Merc 180 in 1991. My dad always wanted a Merc so it was a no-brainer

Then slipped back...SAAB 2.0 Turbo; Audi A6 (first diesel); (E320 CDI in between); Audi A4, 2.0 T

Turned 50 - wanted a Jag. Went for the XJR 4.0 Supercharged. Would strongly recommend this car to any of you thinking of a change. Superb, but not a daily commute car!

Current car - 2002 S320 CDI - very glad to return to Merc. One small problem with air mass, otherwise v happy

Guess I don't have the full dementia symptoms yet! Sorry for the saga, but you asked!

Another nod to the 36-40 group. Anxiously awaiting delivery of my first MB, a champagne silver 97 C200 elegance, next week. Enjoying all your entries in the meantime and falling in love with the car before driving it. Crazy?

I am 19 and have got a 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI:D

Sigh!

At 19 I managed to scrape together enough cash, plus a loan from the bank (applied for in person, interview with the bank manager, remember those?), and bought a 5 year old Opel Ascona. How times have changed, if you start out at the top, what do you have to look forward to in the future?

Feeling distinctly old and poor :(

This poll is VERY spooky. I always thought "Merc2 owners were of the older generation, and now I find myself buying one at the tender age of 39 (40 in June).

This could be seen in two ways.

1. Merc owners are getting younger

2. I'm an old git! :D

Surely 2 would only be true if you were buying a Toymota Avensis! :D

or a jag XJ. Its rarely you see a young 'un in one of those, but you don't see many young folks in nice cars anyway, usually as they can't afford them. My boss said "its a nice car, but a bit of a granda car" i told him that he was confusing age with price. Its usually older folk who can afford a nice car, so they buy one.

I am an exception to the rule as I live with my folks, am single, so much more of my money can go on a car than mosts.

Some real data

Before the new C-class was launched Merc found that the average C-Class estate buyer was 57.

Must have upset them a bit!
