Not sure what the car was splashed with over night. Picture below seems a little stuck to the paint but if I rub it really hard it goes.

What's the safest way to remove this?

In the first instance I'd be trying something like a good quality glue and tar remover, and if that doesn't work, a fallout remover.

Failing that, it's probably something really nasty, and light polishing would be the next step. There have been a few instances I've read about (round cities usually) where cement has managed to get on to cars, and it's obviously abrasive when being removed.

I mention the GTR and fallout removers first, because they are basically contactless, and so are worth a try at about £10 each for a small bottle if you don't have it already.

I think I would have a go with clay bar, and loads of water.
On a sample area watching to see if it spreads, rather than remove, the whatever.

Have you checked with other owners of white/light coloured vehicles in the neighbourhood, are there any chemical/paint/dyestuff manufacturers in the vicinity? To get it off you need to know what it is?

At a site on Leeds Rd in Huddersfield there used to be the home of an ICI plant, it was an organics division where amongst other products manufactured were dyes for the local textile industry as well as for ICI Dulux paints and with the right atmospheric conditions and prevailing wind, properties in surrounding districts suffered with multicoloured rain falling mainly overnight, a popular colour was indigo, but could be any of the primary colours as well, it affected white PVC double glazing units as well as cars and once proven there were regular successful claims against the ICI for vehicle resprays and PVC double glazing replacements. I would spend some time looking for the source?

Sorry to see this - yet again somebody innocent gets clobbered just for being there...

- Are you sure it's not simple tar (which is what the picture looks like)?
- Have there been any road works or roadworks trucks nearby in the last day or two?

As mentioned above, it's worth a bit of effort to see if you can identify a perpetrator and get a claim under way ASAP!

Best of luck!

I’d use AG Super Resin Polish or WD40 to remove that

This is the right result. If something like this can be removed with trying a few 'contactless' cleaning options, it should always be the first way to go.

Someone mentioned a clay bar as an option, but if it's something highly abrasive that can be removed with a contactless wash, there is, in my opinion, a risk of doing a lot of unecessary paintwork damage if you rub the unknown substance over the paint. I clay my car/various panels from time to time, but I never do it before a full contactless decontamination first, otherwise the scratching and marring that occurs can be severe. That's even without an unknown contaminant like in this case.

Glad you got it sorted. Great result.
