How to change auto box oil???

Hi all,

thanks for all the good advice on my W202 C200K (2000) gear box oil question. Have read some other threads about merc's 'lifetime' definition and I think an oil change is well advised. Can anybody point me to some good instructions on how to do it!

I understand I need to buy a dipstick, gasket, filter and about 5 ltrs of Merc oil and have been quoted about £90 inc VAT for all those parts at my local merc dealer. I also beleive that I will not be able to drain the oil from the torque converter as there was no drain plug fitted after 1999 - has any body considered drilling and tapping a drain hole?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Regards

Nick

First part all correct, re the hole, it sounds a good idea but could not be done as the smallest bit of swarf would render the whole gearbox U/S, the only way to drain it would be to slip the gear box out,and unbolt it from the flywheel. In perportion to the amount of oil in the gearbox, the amount in the torque converter is 10% of total, I do have the exact figures somewhere.

Just for interest............Take into account that even if you successfully drilled and tapped the TC you would almost certainly end up with a seriously out-of-balance torque converter.....unless the weight of the new 'plug' exactly matched that of the drilled out material.

As previously mentioned, the TC holds approx 3 litres.

PS....The TC drain plug was discontinued by MB from 09/1999 so it's just possible that though your vehicle was registered in 2000 it may have actually been manufactured pre-09/1999 and therefore have a drain plug fitted......Just a thought?

One way to drain fluid out of the system is to disconect the lines to the oil cooler at the rad and blow though them. You wont get all the oil out but some of the remaining. Tip, get new clamps for the gearbox sump and watch the front left clamp (different from the others) This one usually siezes and requires drilling the aluminium away from the steel retaining bolt. Electrolysis of steel causes this. Worst case senario is that the bolt shears off flush with the sump lip. The repair for that is to center the stud, drill out, and replace with a 10mm bolt, 30mm long (plus nut)
