Depending on the size of engine etc, if you floor it it will change down, if you go further and feel a click, there is a microswitch button below the accelerator pedal which will drop down 2 gears, have a look if there is a switch below the pedal and give it a whirl.
Might sound obvious but make sure that you have the switch next to the gear lever, in S position. If in the E position you will find it very difficult if not impossible to get kick down.
Try to do it quicker! First, take your foot off, then step on it quick, you will feel it shift down one gear, if you take your foot off and step on it, which hit the micro switch (you will feel and hear the 'klick'), then it will goes like a rocket!
In my cars, with both summer and winter mode, or the E and S mode in the older model, they all have this feature, but in S mode, it will be more 'impressive'!
In my 1994 C180, I really have to kickdown for it to change to a lower gear when going uphill or overtaking, why I don't know. Sometimes when I floor without kickdown, it will drop 1 gear, most times it won't. Is something wrong with the auto ? My 1997 has the upgraded 5 speed auto and it changes freely when I step harder without kickdown, this is a lot better transmission, they say its electronic, the older one is vacuum actuated? I haven't needed to try kickdown on the 5speed as its not necessary since it will change by itself when needed. Any comments buddies? Is W setting in the 1997 necessary on wet roads? We don't get snow here unless we get to the mountains. I did spin my 1994's wheels last year getting off on S in the wet. Its Winter now so please help. I also have some noise problems for a few seconds while the engine in the 1997 is started. It goes away when the revs drops to about 850 or 900. The sound is unusual like mechanical while the revs are at 1200 warming up. Thanks.
If your auto box is the same set up as the 201/124/126 series. then there is a cable that comes up from the gearbox and links to the throttle linkage.
If you locate it, there should be an adjustable bar on the linkage where they join. That is resposible for the timing of the gear changes relative to throttle position.
