Agreed on both points. My wife has had 2 hip replacements in the last 14 months, so I thought to SLK would be going, but no she still likes it.

Maybe the getting in and out is a good “Work out” for your good lady’s new hips ? .

We finally have my SLK back and had a lovely Sunday jaunt today through the lanes and back roads to a favourite pub - with a short blast up Charing Hill that was great fun! Wife's major comment for the SLK is the superb visibility all round, including being able to see behind in the NS wing mirror. Plenty of leg room for her 5ft2 (and typical female, seat all the way back!), doors large so plenty of room getting in/out if the parking space is adequate, heated leather seats really nice, happy bunnies. Getting the tracking sorted has markedly improved the feel of the car, just need to change the current Hankook Ventus tyres for something with softer sidewalls, she currently feels like I'd imagine a car on run flats feels!

16” wheels are the way to go - you can get some good deals from MyTyres for alloys and tyres - they also supply the fitting kit - hub centric rings and 20 wheel bolts for mine :)

That agrees with the original road test of the R171 when it first came out - the car being tested was on 17's (like mine) and he commented the ride was a bit hard and may well be better on standard 16's rather than optional 17's! Wonder if I can find someone local with an R171 on 16's and get a ride comparison, as ATM I don't want to get into buying and selling wheels.

I’m not planning on being over your way, but who knows... if I am I’ll let you know and you can try mine

Just had a look at MyTyres, my goodness there's a price difference 17's to 16's, with a set of non-staggered 17's with tyres £1k and a set of non staggered 16's with tyres £600 or less! Could not find anything about hubcentric rings (whatevber those are!)and bolts - although I am on the lookout for 16 corrosion resistant wheel bolts if I can find them at a decent price! Found a set of MB Lockers for £33 delivered (https://www.partsformercedes-benz.c...d=515&osCsid=1d78bf4cbe8144aafa760c1c56dd3d59), they do aftermarket bolts for just over £2 each but I'm waiting to hear if they're corrosion resistant rather than MB standard "rust as soon as you take them out of the packaging"!

I have staggered 16” summers and non-staggered winters.

Hub-centric is how Mercedes centre the wheels so MyTyres support a little clip in ring that goes on the inside of the wheel (there’s a proper name for them but I can’t remember it at the moment). They supply the fitting lot which includes the wheel bolts and rings. Just do a selection based on your registration and you can then decide on wheels and tyres you like. You can even pick the colour of your car on the site to see how the wheels look on it :)

I must be looking at the wrong MyTyres website as I can see no opportunity to select car by reg number, let alone to select a staggered set-up and fitting kit!

That's what I saw Russell, but it only offered me unstaggered setups 16" or 17", and could not see anything about fitting kits and wheel bolts, let alone choose by reg number!

Be careful if you have a 171 with the uprated front callipers 16" wheels WILL NOT fit, no mention in the hand book.
I had to buy a set of 17'' wheels for my winter tyres. 16" wheels fitted on our 2004 SLK 171, but not the 2010 171.

Our first 2004 171 was on 16" wheels, & it was a great ride. Our current 2010 171 in on 18" wheels its rock hard, don't like it at all. Our winter tyres at on 17" wheels which is much better, but I still prefer the 16" wheels for ride.

How would I know if my car has uprated front calipers? Is there a code on the build sheet - which I have - as my car came from new with the optional 17" wheels.
