Hi All...i have a 84 300sd...took out engine and transmission..i need to remove the torque converter, there is no bolts or nuts that is reachable...how does this come off ? Thanks..........
At the back of the engine is a small plastic cover, prize this off, you need to rotate engine so you can undo the six bolts individually and the reverse when bolting it back, you will need a socket to fit the bolts, ( its not rocket science). Hope this helps
One thing I would look carefully for on a 25 year old diesel is cracks in the flex plate - the relatively thin steel plate that the torque convertor bolts pass through. Check especially in the areas around the bolt holes themselves.
As the flex plate "flexes" each time the engine turns, I can imagine that the plate has seen many fatigue cycles by now, and some flex plates on these engines (OM617?) have been found to be almost dropping apart!
