Hello Malcolm,

The problem we have is with the HARD hitting suspension / tyre setup, on less than smooth road surfaces.

Thank you for your input.

Malcolm,

The CLC 200 Evolution Coupe is fitted (as standard) with (7.5J x18 H2 ET 36) wheels and shod with (225/40 R 18 92Y XL) on front and (245/35 R18 92Y XL) on thev rear.

Hello Jack and welcome to the forum. I have a new CLC 180 Sport and the suspension is in my opinion very good. In fact comfort and handling is far better than the BMW 320i saloon (E46) I had before.

You don't say what model you have, mine has 18" wheels with low profile Conti tyres, which would normally exacerbate the problem. Have you checked the obvious, such as tyre pressure?

It's nice to have someone else on the forum with a CLC, perhaps we can cross reference in future posts. :D

Jack, with that size of wheel this only gives a side wall tyre height of 9cm, first try the car on the lower of the 2 pressures listed in the fuel door,as Killwilly mentioned.

The only other way would be to drop down to 17" wheels, this would increase the sidewall height to 10.1 cm.

The tyres could be overinflated so do check that out first

:D

E46 suspension is Rock Hard so thats not such a compliment to the OP's MB:D

40 and 35 profile tyres are very low profile and this wont help his problem.
For me I would look at 17" wheels (or even 16") and get tyres that are much less severe in profile.

As far as I can tell on a 17" wheel you would be looking at Front 225/45 R17 and Rear 245/40 R17

The SE version is available with 205 / 55 x 16 but they may not be to your taste looks wise.

My SL has the standard 17" wheels which are quite firm enough for me thankyou. It is available with 18" and 19" optionally (No thank you).

17" wheels would give 45 and 40 section f/r respectively. Would 16" wheels fit over the calipers?

Was the model offered without Sport suspension?

The guy has just spent in excess of 20k on a new car and now he is supposed to ditch his original wheels and fork out whatever the cost is for a replacement set..... I think not.

In 06- 2006 18" became standard on the SL500 and up, I have only ever had 18" and now 19" with a higher profile tyre to give the same ride as the 18" that I took off.

There is a point where the ride is affected and this goes both ways, with 17" tyres and a 45 profile you can get more roll, the 18" would be a better bet offering a good ride, and good comfort at the same time,, you can try mine on 19" on Sunday

The first question is maybe, what car is the poster coming from - what is he comparing it with ?

I agree with you, if there is a problem with the car it must be sorted by the dealer.
If it is just that after living with the car for a while he has come to dislike the set-up, then he needs to look at the options. Perhaps change the car, rather than mess with wheels/tyres/suspension would be the better solution.

It really highlights the need to have as long a test drive (in as many models) as possible. Preferably over a weekend/couple of days

Jack, out of interest, what car did you test drive? When we test drove a CLC before purchase I made sure it was a sports model with the 18" wheels. Sadly it was a diesel because they didn't have a petrol demonstrator to try.

One of the first things I noticed was the better steering and suspension combination compared with my BMW and the seats were more supportive.

I'm looking forward to giving it a good test driving down through France in September.

Would it be possible to try another car with the same spec?

They do offer a rather nice 16" wheel on their basic CLC 160 K BlueEFFICIENCY model in SE guise- unfortunately as with many MB models nowadays as soon as you upspec the car [trim or engine size]you have little choice but to have some impossibly low aspect ratio wheel/tyre combination and lowered suspension foisted on you. The poster may be able to put these 16" wheels on but brake caliper/disc clearance may well be an issue. Sadly buy another car is probably the best advice.

Thanks for all the responses to my request re softening the ride of my CLC200 Evolution Coupe.
Subsequently the dealer provided me with a new Standard CLC200 Coupe to drive for 24hours with an offer to swap it’s 17” tyres /wheels over for my 18” tyres/wheels.
After driving the Standard model (17” wheels) for a couple of days, over a variety of road surfaces, I found that there wasn’t a great deal of difference in the overall ride. The main difference was with pot holes, but on well-maintained roads my Evolution is a dream to drive.
Therefore, for the sake of achieving only a relatively softer ride, I decided it was not worth downgrading my Evolution model by switching to the basic 17” wheels/tyres.
Furthermore, I was advised that the firm ride was derived equally from the low profile tyres and the sports suspension setup, and as such the springs and shocks would also have to be softened to achieve the best outcome – the dealer rejected this proposition.

• I came from the previous Merc model (C180 Sports Coupe) and initially the ride was only SO SO until I fitted it with a set of (same size) Good Year tyres and that gave me a perfect ride over ALL road surfaces – plus great mileage.

Any suspension or tyre experts out there?

A diesel
The car is actually called a CLC Sport Coupe and yours has the handling Evolution package.

I can't understand why you bought this model car if you didn't want a car with a sporty ride, when it's specifically designed to give just that.
