Hi and welcome.. better luck next time. Sorry to hear you had bad luck on a purchase.

Who did you buy the car from? Was it a private / retail sale? Did you complain to seller?

It was private, sold as seen. No come back. The first time I'd ever bought private too.

Picked up the replacement today. Drove it back 3 hours and didn't overheat

Had RAC look at it first and sent the oil to the labs too. Finally I'm happy with my CLK

Great news.

Can you please outline a little more about the oil sampling process please?

Thanks

It's just a bolt on service that the RAC offer as part of the inspection. It's not expensive. On a car of this age, the overall inspection is £349 and then just £15 for them to send the oil sample to the labs. After 5 working days, it comes back with a report on the oil condition, graded A, B ,C or X (No action, monitor, Action or Immediate Action).

The actual process they do at the lab I am not sure of. But the report predicts likelihood of failures succ as piston rings, liners, crank shafts, valves etc based on the elements they find in the oil and the quantities of those elements.

They also give you results versus target results for varying contents, such as metals, additives and contaminants
