Hi to you all

It would seem that my many problems with starting and rough idle have been caused by humidity in the dizzy cap.

The car is often left standing for several weeks but in a de-humidified garage....never the less it does seem to accumulate some dampness within.

I read somewhere that a small hole drilled in the cap may resove the problem what do you think?

it may help

but it might cause more trouble than it cures. I think it might allow even more moisture in when you are out driving, and if you cover it up with the black rain shield, it may be of limited use anyway. the best thing for thses 300 engines is regular use, up to full operating temperature. I left our te for about 3 weeks w'out using it and had to fit a new dizzy as the centre electrode had given up.
If you do go for a clean it out befor you use it regime, give some though to that fixing bolt at 6 '0'clock. It's a pig. try packing it out a bit with washers so you don't have as much work to do when removing it, or swapping it for a same shank dia bolt, at least you'll be able to get a socket or spanner on the head more easily.

Thanks for that Myros ......I do use the protection cap but the car is often left standing and yes that bolt is a pig to get up but by adapting an allen key it is not to bad now.

The problem as you say for me is limited use MUST USE IT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!

You can spray WD 40 or similar straight into the inside of the distributor cap and it will last a long time. That's the standard treatment for the electrical ignition systems of yesteryear - I do it all through the winter on the Mazda, inside and outside of the dist cap.
Don't think much to drilling a hole - it could create a mechanical and/or electrical stress point.

Thanks for that yes wd40 was used.....what was interesting was that after I had cleaned the contacts and used an air line to remove dust before useing wd40 it still was not cured!

I removed the cap again wiped with a microfibre cloth and then all was well,,,,,,,,,,,well up to now.
