Hi all,

New here but have learned a lot from reading the wealth of info. Helps a newbie to merc ownership. I have looked through the threads but cant quite find the answer I am looking for so wondered if i could ask it here. It is about suspension and 4wheel drive so hope this is the right place to ask it.,. Here goes...

I have just bought a midnight blue 4matic 300TE on a J 91. It comes with the 4matic / suspension system in the test mode as a pipe above the exhaust cracked and all the fluid fell out causing a pretty white smokey effect. This happened with the last owner who has since done 3000 miles in the test position.

I have bought the car at a price relative to the fact there is this pipe burst. The 4matic system was all working fine before the pipe burst.

My question is , can i just have the pipework replaced and refil the hydraulic fluid and reset the test switch or will there need to be some mercedes approved resetting type affair to get everything in order? Can anyone give me any ideas,

Can anyone also tell me if him having driven it so many miles on the test setting will likley have caused some real problems? Any help very much appricated. With thanks

I have a 300 TE 4 matic and drove it for two weeks in test mode just to see if there was any difference in the fuel consumption in RWD mode only. It made no difference to the consumption on the urban use but when I put the lever back to normal the 4 matic light stayed on indicating that there was a problem. I tried various things over the next few journeys. e.g. moving the lever with the engine off and with it running, moving it slowly,in Neutral & park, reving etc. After being on the point of giving up I tried it one more time with the engine cold and running and hey presto the 4 matic was OK again.

Thanks

Ah thanks for that, will bear that in mind when holding my breath and engaging leaver. I had read somewhere that sometimes it needs time to settle itself down and behave. I had also read that sometimes it needs to be reset via the diagnostic thingame..

Thanks very much for replying though, that will help keep the blood pressure down when it does not all behave instantly...

:p
