Congratulations and welcome to the forum. :) I am 1.94 metres tall and I haven't found a Merc that I couldn't fit into yet. Your best bet is to try a couple and see for yourself.

You should have no problem with the roof off. If it is a bit tight behind the wheel, drive as for a mini - remove drivers seat, sit on back seat (then I suppose you might get the roof on too?).

More seriously, a W220 S class is a very spacious car with miles of seat travel and the squab can be lowered quite a way too. I would be surprised if you could not find a comfortable position.

You should easily get a 500 for £12K, and perhaps a higher mileage diesel. Worth having one from the galvanized era, built post o4-03.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated. Have got my heart set on a w107 420 or 500 sl and if i can find the right one will be driving down to the Dordogne in 6 weeks time, with my dad who is a retired car mechanic, always useful.

I'm 5'8"

and have loads of room. The seats do go up and down as well as back and forward. Not much, but they do.
Go and try one on for size somewhere. the clearance with either roof is about the same, but you can obviously stretch a bit more with the soft top.

Galvanising began somewhat earlier than that.
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=23630

E CLASS -211 series- saloon and estates: -

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1, 2003, production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

CLK CLASS – 209 series

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 2 2003 production onwards.
During the previous six months (Q4 2002 + Q1 2003) the process was
gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles
were galvanised during this lead-up period, but not all.

SL CLASS –R230 series

This is not so easy to be specific because the change-over period
continued right through into Q3 2004. So although many SLs were galvanised in early 2004 it is not till the end of the third quarter of 2004 that one can say that all were galvanised.

S CLASS –220series and CL class 215 series.

The S class and CL class are built of a combination of aluminium and steel. For the
aluminium components there is, of course, no galvanising process.

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1 2003 production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

Two separate problems: - some are tall in the body (height from seat squab to roof matters); some are long in the leg as I am. Some are both. ( I had a friend who was 6ft 3ins but his leg length was 4 inches shorter than mine. Odd how much humans vary)

The longest standard trouser size used to be 33 inches inside leg measurement (which I am) and very few cars other than Mercedes offered me enough legroom. If your legs are this long or less, my comments below may help. By enough legroom I mean enough to get the seat back far enough so that both thighs are supported by the squab while driving normally. Often tall drivers have their knees up in the air with no thigh support at all and this can be very tiring on a long run as well as causing backache.

The SLK does not have enough legroom for me but the SL has plenty.
The C class has plenty.
The E class has plenty.
The S class has plenty.
The ML has plenty if you like the seat low, but it swings forward reducing legroom as you raise it. However, enough for me when raised, plus a bit to spare.
The GL: - same as ML but less legroom in the front. Touch and go for me. Done to make room for third row of seats.
The R class: - Like the ML, raising the seat cuts legroom and I find it a bit less than I would like. Done to get in the third row of seats. Longwheelbase has more legroom in the back -but not in the front.
The A class and B class both have masses of legroom.

I'm not tall in the body so cannot help on that side of things.
