I cannot find my Engine Management Fault light

Hi Everyone

I have a 1999 C200 Classic Petrol. My owner's manual indicates that I have an amber coloured Engine Management fault light within my Instrument Panel. Its icon should look similar to a throttle body. Since I have never seen such a fault light lit, I dismantled my Instrument Panel, to check all the bulbs and see where this warning light could be. The instrument Panel removed very easily by pushing from the back, without removing the steering wheel. However after finding all bulbs to be healthy, I looked very closely at all the alarm icons, including on the instrument faces and I cannot find any that has an Engine management icon. Does this mean I don't have one and if so, how do I know my ECU is detecting a problem?

I have attached some pics of the instrument panel.

Please have a look at my other postings as I am trying to investigate why my engine wont idle or keep running. :)

The fronts for half your lights are still in the dash.

You'll note that your ABS, BAS, Battery warning lights etc. are not in the section which you've removed.

Sorry but I have checked those thoroughly. The warning light fronts slip outfrom the bottom of the complete instrument panel, at its bottom corners, left and right. I shone a torch through these and only saw the other warning indicators, with none for the engine management fault light. Where the manual shows two engine warning lights for the diesel model (pre-heater and engine management) at the bottom of the right side of the instrument panel, my warning light front has nothing for the engine, as you might be able to see from the two rather blurred attached photos.

Does you handbook not also show where in the cluster the light is? This is usually the case..

Thanks for reply

Unfortunately the owners manual only shows the diesel version of the instrument cluster, even though in the following pages it lists the petrol Engine management warning symbol, amongst a list of all warning lights, but does not show you where it is.

I'm in the same boat! I have a 1999 C200, and can't see an engine management light either...

Does the EM light come on when the ignition is first switched on? I think all the warning lamps light (momentarily) as a lamp check.

Looking at my handbook there does,nt seem to be one, there is a yellow light far right lower corner labelled "EPC" but this is only for diesel variants.
My handbook is for a facelift w202

Hi Guys

It's nice to know I am not going mad and that other facelifted W202 owners can't find their engine management warning lights. I should apologise though if I have given you all something to worry about. Maybe this has been an oversight during the face lift, or they have used up stock of diesel orientated instrument clusters, then just removed the bulb holders and inserted a new warning light front that has neither deisel or petrol engine management warning indicators.

I have just noticed that on my fuel gauge there is a small yellow circular light about 3 mm diameter, positioned directly under the fuel guage needle pivot point. As there is a seperate low fuel yellow light at the bottom of this guage, it has led me to wonder if this little yellow light is the engine management light? It is too small to have an icon and on my car it never lights up.

Perhaps it's only on USA vehicles?
