I have fitted used tyres to all my cars in the past for many years, even the race car used second hand tyres and never had any issues.
Now I have mates in the tyre business so they can near match used prices for me on new tyres.
The only thing I have found with used tyres is that once there 3/4 to half thread depth they go bald really quickly. A bit like filling your fuel tank, it goes for miles when full, once at half way it empties really fast :(

"He said the tyres were stored badly outside, exposed to rain, sunshine and dirt that would make them "deteriorate very quickly."

Love that exert from the article, does he take his wheels off his car every night and store them in his house?

I think he meant the inside of the tyre which should never see daylight & rain has been left exposed, it mentions elsewhere about moisture on the inside causes the tyre to deteriorate.

As for the used car has unknown tyres, that is true, but the history of the car is better known, so slightly less risk. Personally I budget for replacing the tyres asap when I buy a car unless I am very sure of their history. Just part of the budget, but equally I tend to keep cars for quite a while so not much of a burden.
I tend to disagree

Pretty difficult to see the inside edge of the tyres when they're on the car - Example from the forum today

I was listening to a lady last night talking about how she'd used her car to pull an old apple tree out yesterday - this was a Citroen C4 Picasso not a Unimog or Land Rover... Doubt that usage would be listed in the advert when she sells it...

Big assumption that the seller gives a rats a**e about what condition the inside is in. The buyer doesn't get to see them and inspect them before they go on. Probably wouldn't know what to look for anyway.

I am surprised its not an insurance question as it would highlight those owners who are more likely to take risks.

My old tyre dealer used to import them from Germany, many owners put new on when they change to winters and he always had a good stock of good quality part worns.

I’ve used part worn tyres and never had a bad one.
Legal minimum tread depth for winter tyres in Germany is 3mm. Which is why you see loads of 3mm winter tyres for sale in the UK.

I have bought several sets of summer & winter part worn tyres, with out any issues.
I have a couple of conditions. 1, not older than 3 years, I normally have to ask for the age.
2, must have at least 5mm of tread.

It was the summers my tyre guy was importing, as they had a bit of wear - all around 5-6 mm they didn't refit them in Germany when spring came around again.

It was in conjunction with Tyresafe, not on their own.

I'm glad none of you snowflakes lived in Africa! Crikey, we used to Retread tyres up to three times - Part-Worn...??? You guys are spoilt!!! :p

A good inspection and a re-tread would be a far more preferable option.
