You'll regret selling the 203, keep both and be happy, okay slightly poorer but very happy

A bit of background, and a bit of justifying what I have done ;-). My stepdad was 70 in January, and I've arranged a trip to the west coast of Scotland for just the two of us, to celebrate, drink wine and generally do what old boys do. For this we will need suitable transport, and although we both have a selection of suitable steeds, a bit of strange always stirs the soul
to%20be%20added%20again.gif

I tried a range of stuff, but finally found something to fit the bill. I've courted the W204 C63 AMG for a long time. I drove the 6.2 when it first came out with a view to replacing the C32 AMG I have owned from very nearly new. Despite about three very close encounters, including a week long trial, I never felt stirred enough to commit. Sure, the M156 is a hell of an engine - it's a 6.2 litre v8 ffs, - but it was always a one trick pony. The gearbox was a let down and the suspension was exactly the same as the W203 that I already owned. It just didn't give me the thrill that I hoped it would.
Stroll on a few years, and along comes the W205 C63. This is a completely new car. Yes, it's a modern Benz, and they aren't built like they used to be in terms of quality, but in driveability terms the AMG derivatives are now really coming close to what BMW have to offer. Did I say coming close? If only BMW offered an engine like this!! The 4.0 biturbo v8 is a masterpiece!! Basically two A45 engines siamesed, the "hot vee" is a hell of a thing! This engine powers virtually all the new range of AMG cars, varying in power output a bit and having a dry sump in the AMG GT so it can be mounted lower in the chassis. This thing is biblical! Huge torque, barely any turbo lag, revs right out to 7000 rpm, and the noise! Did I mention the noise? The old 6.2 sounded great, but this thing is amazing. Perhaps slightly less old school muscle car, but my God it stirs the soul!
Negatives? Colour is a bit meh. I've gone for a sort of dark gunmetal grey. Stealth meets weapons grade.
I've also picked a car with 18" wheels. The 19" perhaps look more of the part, but the ride is worse, the tyres are more expensive and the 19's have a nasty tendency to crack. Have you seen the roads lately?
The car has the Drexler mechanical limited slip diff as opposed to the clever electronic diff fitted to the S model. The Drexler is proven tech, the electronic one is all new. It gets rave reviews, but I'm inclined to go with the proven unit in the first instance.
Stuff I don't like? The shape of the car as a whole is difficult to like. It's a "flame surfaced" design apparently. I'm hoping it will grow on me, but I don't have to look at its while I'm driving, and the driving part is great! Interior is rather nice. The screen stuck on the dash is ugly, but you need it to navigate the ridiculously over the top driving mode choices. Whatever happened to the "sport" button?
Gearbox is great. 7 speeds, single wet clutch, but nearly as quick changing as the dct in the BMW product. Plenty of pops and bangs on downshifts and that lovely barrp that modern turbo stuff does on the up shifts.
On the whole, a very impressive machine from the Affalterbach stable. Very much looking forward to becoming better acquainted with it!!

I found the 203 vs 204 suspension in AMG form to be quite different, the 204 being much harder.

Facelift 204 c63 has the same MCT 7 speed as well, it's rather good, but not so smooth.

There will I'm sure be a difference in the spring rates and dampers, as the 6.2 engine must be heavier than the m112 v6. It's the design of the suspension that I refer to. The suspension arms and links front and rear are all the same layout on w203 and w204 models. It leaves the cars a little dull dynamically in my opinion.

The 7G in the w204 was for me always reluctant to downshift when I wanted it to. Up shifts were great, and it would even run to the limiter in manual mode if you didn't grab the up paddle. Downshifts though were a different story. The ecu would deny you a lower gear unless it was happy, and that often led to an uncomfortable delay. The w205 is superb in this regard - holding the down paddle will immediately shift you to the lowest permissible gear, even if there is only 100rpm headroom left in the engine. It simply does exactly what you ask, when you ask it to. I'm sure this can only be software, as I believe the gearbox is the same as the last of the runout w204 models. Low speed manoeuvring feels jerky in my mates 2013 C63 coupe, and they seem to have addressed that too in the w205.

Aha I see what you mean. Yes I agree. I swapped my C63 for my friends M2 for a day, and the first thing I noticed was the much better turn in compared to the C63.

They are better when warm and I hear the later software update makes the much better, keep meaning to get mine done.

I can't say I have ever noticed the reluctance for shifts on the C63, as you say, probably difference in the later models.
