Going by the number of X5's I see down here, with low milage on them, in the dealers used car lots, you need to do a spread sheet, on the X5 compared with alternatives.
In our case my lady loved the X5, but it was for lady reasons, colour etc.
However we needed a strong tug for our caravan, and when I did the spread sheet, all thoughts of things came screaming out at me. Now do not get me wrong, the X5 may be a good car, but it depends what you are going to use it for.
In our case we were considering also a ML, and eventually settled on a ML270.
Why
1. It was cheaper.
2. In base model it was better equiped.
3. It was more fuel efficient, most important fuel, even diesel is sooooo expensive down here.
4. It had more room.
5. It had a higher tow ball down weight, which is
important if you are towing.
6. It had better torque, 400 nm at 1600 to 2600 rpm.
The secret in my opinion, of succesfully buying a new car, is to take the emotion out of the decision making progress.
Estabish what you are really needing the car for, and make sure it meets those requirements.
Down here the ML270, is in such demand, that you can wait 6 months for a new one, and good second hand ones, sell for more than new price.
I hope I have helped you a little, in the case I am not bagging the X5, it was that in our case the ML met our requirements, the X5 did not.
