Hi again guys. My 2001 C180, 2.0 LTR with 66K has been starting very rough lately with the RPM all over the place for a minute or two and then settles down. MB Brighton tells me the camshaft magnet seal has caused an oil leak and as a result ECU, Airmass Sensor, Engine wiring and O2 Sensor (FWD) need changing at a cost of nearly £3000. MB Gatwick just replaced the O2 sensor but no improvement. Any suggestions is welcome. My car is not worth much more than that anyway but I like it very much. Thanks in advance

Thanks S.A.M
Do you suggest getting this done outside MB dealer? I am in sussex, any suggestions where I might be able to get this done and buy the parts, etc? And lastly, do you think I can chase MB for a some financial help as this seems to be a common problem with these engines.

Thanks

Got another forum member shipping his car to us from brighton, we are not that far away from you!!!

Alan Robertson in Hove can sort this out for you. Alternatively try Rivervale Mercedes (next door to MB of Brighton)

Your car is well above the age where MB will offer goodwill. I wouldn't even entertain having your car worked on by a dealer. Without going into Indie specialist vs dealer the economics of dealer work do not add up with a 8yr C class worth about £4-£5k. Take it to Sam Unit, or Ollies (PCS in Portsmouth) or any other local MB specialist.

I have same age 230CLK and touch wood dont have any issues as yet but I needed a peace of mind so I took it to SAM/UNIT (160miles round trip)had the ATF changed along with a full inspection. I still ended up saving around £150 from dealers price.

Its amazing how people can spend soo much more on their cars by going to dealer when the price cant be justified against the actual value of the car. I would never go to MB now and would also try to go to a reputable Indie and get it all looked at.

You will get far better service from an Indie than a Dealer plus they will give free advise on things that MB may charge by hour.... LOL

I need your help.

Many thanks to all of you who have responded in particular S-A-M. I will start looking for alternative venue to fix this problem and certainly consider S-A-M if I decide to keep the car. I might look into trading it in in exchange for a 2004/05 C220, CDI. Any opinions on this car is very welcomed.

Thanks again

For a start the ECU will wash out, so will the MAF with no problem at all. The car will need a plug blocker for the camshaft seal about £35 and you just plug it in.

This just leaves the wiring harness, best to replace that though some do not and wait till the oil drains away, though the MAF may get a little oily and need washing, so maybe not as bad as you have been told

Thanks Malcolm, can you please remind me what MAF stands for? Also, do you happen to have any leads/referance to the plug blocker you are referring to? Lastly, where is the ECU in this beautiful car of mine? I am determined to fix this old lady and make us both happy again. Cheers

Hi again, found out about MAF, if thats the unit in between the air filter and the fuel injector, I happen to have a new one from Seimens and can replace it later on when other affected parts are looked into.

The O2 sensor by the way may burn itself clean again, once the oils stop going in.

At the worst you may have to change the wiring loom, about £400 but many have not as I said before.

The MAF is the Mass air flow sensor the measures the air flow and temp etc.

The first thing to do is to get the blocker, you just pull the plug off the front top of the engine, plug in the blocker and that will stop any more oil doing any damage.

Is the car a 202 or 203 please as this was a change of year.

I believe its a W203. is this blocker got any other name that it goes for? I wanna guide my mechanic in the right direction to get the correct part. Also, I did some reading re cleaning of the AMS. I now need to know where the ECU is hidden and if there is a need to reset the ECU by removing a particular fuse after cleaning? Thanks

I had it changed on mine recently. The blocker is simply an extention cable which blocks the path of oil going via wire to ECU or other components. I can try to get a picturefrom mine tommorow and post it but you shoud be able to get this from MB quiet easily. I think i changed magnet (part that was leaking) and also the extention cable for £50 and it straight forward swap

Wait till tommorw, I wil post you a pic of the wire i purchased and the magnet i changed. as Malc said oil will wash away from wires and the ECU so dnt need to worry too much, Check the DIY section on how to clean MAF. You should clean it when changing the cable and then after a few weeks as then all the oil wil be moved from the wiring loom
