Guys I've had an issue with my car 2010 S350 cdi with 75,000 miles.

Here is the issue

Along with this noise the other symptoms are ocasonal banging into gear and strange gear changes. Also occasionally I get ABS and traction control kicking in at vet low speed before the warning lights kick in.

It was diagnosed by 2 garages as gearbox issues but today the gearbox company have called saying nothing wrong with it. They have had it out and can't find a single problem.

What is going on here. I'm loosing the will to live.

Very strange...before taking it out, they should have scanned it. Any faults should have shown up then and thrown a code. They don't just open a box with out having any idea what to look for ( used to do that years ago....in older and less complicated transmission, but not anymore) So they would be focusing on a particular part of the box.....based on what codes they found.

No coads have ever been found. Noise sounds like its coming from bell housing when you have car on the ramp and spin the wheels

What garages did you take it to? Were any of them MB main dealer or specialist independents?

What's the age and mileage of the car buddy . When was your gearbox ATF and filter changed or when is it due ?
Edit, sorry just seen 75k miles , did it have gearbox service at 37500miles ?

does that thing have a thin torque/drive plate driving the TC ? . almost sounds like a solenoid doing its own thing thru an iffy connection any oil in the wiring to the box? if box has been interviewed by pukka outfit it has to be something pre box
either way if there are no codes the issue did not ought to be anything that should be reporting such codes feel for you buddy. seems a B

Are you sure it's not a rattling cat or loose heatshield?

Yep and whatever it is is making the gearbox perform a little weird
John, I take it that the seller's offer to take the car back is not still open? If it is I'd do that. If not might be worth speaking to MD Motorcare on the Wirral. MB independent. Not used them myself but they come highly recommended by people who's opinion I trust.

I think I might go down that route. Thing is I just can't find another with the spec I want!

Debating leaving the s class all together and going for a 730d

Going to call the seller tomoz. The thing that's stopping me is I've spent a few quid on things like window tints and wheel refurb that I just don't want to loose.

The thing with this issue is what ever it is is causing the box to perform strange. When turning left or right from say a main road into a side street if you coast and it drops to first or second then you put your foot on the accelerator it has a pause or a jump, given the fact if it's in N and you spin the rear wheels it makes the noise at the front and there is nothing mechanically connecting them at this point I'm starting to think it could be a solenoid sensing wheel speed or something like the abs pump, this could be a road worth investigating as occasionally it does activate ABS and traction at very low speed

I think you are most likely going down the correct line with wheel sensors etc. It’s likely a sensor that’s intermittently faulty or sending false signals within the parameter range. I had that recently with a glow plug relay. No faults displayed at all when the car was scanned but it just wasn’t starting correctly.

I was going to suggest a possible problem with the rear differential but if the noise is at the front that’s unlikely.

Hi

I sent it to you directly.

Yes it is a clicking noise, I asked the gearbox place to look at balence weights as you suggested but the said all OK???

The noise sounds like an old viscous fan
