I think they could offer the Garmin with a dock for say £500-£550 (nice profit there) and the COMAND for those who prefer it and are happy to pay over £2,000. IIRC they did offer the Garmin with a dock on the facelift A class and B class? That was in the Press release for the facelift but whether or not it came to the UK I don't know.

I think Tom Tom is similar in many ways but not as good IMO. Tried both; found Garmin better. And Halfords said the Garmin is much more reliable. Most airlines and large ships use Garmin navigation equipment.

Yes, but the POI warnings on Garmin are no where as good as TomTom, my garmin warns me about POI that are on the other side of the road and its quite long winded converting csv to gpx then to gpi format, with TT, you download the OV2 files, copy them to the map folder and thats it.. Do you watch the Gadget Show? they did a test of the best (from the presenters point of view) sat navs, and Garmin was slow to capture the sats, got lost, said he was in a dead end when he clearly wasnt, TT had none of these issues

Perforated leather steering wheel that blows cool air through the holes to stop sweaty hands in the summer.

It's a nice idea which I would totally support but the support issues are immense. If it doesn't integrate properly after a firmware or map upgrade is it Garmin's fault or MB's? What if Garmin do what the mobile phone industry seems to frequently do and change the connector?

Cars are ready a long time before they appear for sale (seen the facelift W204 pictures?) so something like a consumer model Garmin (very different to the pro models) is probably going to be obsolete before the car gets launched.

Many people think the consumer models from all manufacturers will disappear as the software can run on mobile phones now. TomTom is really a software company - they only made the hardware as a means of selling their software and other services.

They did it on the facelift A and B class so these problems can be solved. Also see the continual TV ads for the Renault who now offer docking for the TomTOM.

We can have i-pod docks. Why not Garmin or Tom Tom.

SEAT do it in the New Ibiza - had one the other day when daughter's Ibiza was in being serviced.

Sure it can be done (but did it ever really appear on A & B?) but the solution might be quickly obsolete.

Of course the other issue is that people wouldn't spend £2K on the COMAND system which probably costs MB well under $500.

With the amount that they sell the cost would be around £150 for all that is in them,,MB have no cost involved in the making of these things Bosch and Harmon Becker take care of that

Hawks suggestion would be nice. I'd like to have the garmin sat nav hard wired in and not mounted on the screen. A modification of the head unit is all thats required.

Alas I am very happy with my Mercedes and apart from the aux port in (which comand online could fit to my car) I cannot think of many improvements. A wooden wheel would be nice but I can fit that. My biggest gripe with the 211 is the seating and steering wheel adjustments. The wheel doesn't telescope out meaning I am close than I'd like to be.

Make cars that don't rust would be nice. Someones 53 plate 211 has rust in the rear arches, and on the doors. BMWs were non glavanised and none of them rusted as much. MB must improve their body work.

My facelift 211's steering wheel goes up and down and in and out (no shaky all about though as the wheels are balanced...) my 210 had the same was it not standard on the first 211's?

It is a very nice feature when you are doing long runs,,I use the 3 stored adjustments to give 3 alternative driving posisions

Fit wing mirrors on A Class which can be manually folded in. Even better - make electric folding mirrors standard on all cars.

The steering wheel on mine telescopes in and out as well as up and down. I thought all E's had this? Either manual or electric.

The 53 plate could have been built in 2002. All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1, 2003, production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

BMW's had loads of rust problems. See this: -
