Just about to buy this from ebay but thought it best to ask the experts first. Is this the best I can buy without spending Star money? Is this iCarsoft the one to go for, My son has the latest Launch 431 but it has been dropped and is badly broken and is currently out of action. Thanks john

iCarsoft is great if your vehicle is on the supported list (i.e. NOT 38 pin diagnostic port or early OBD).
If its not OBD-II then you need something else.

In terms of code reading its probably 90-95% of STAR but nowhere near STAR in terms of tests, functions etc (but then nothing is).

Pretty much sums it up.

IMO for anyone owning or buying a big Merc its essential .. fantastic VFM. Mine has paid for itself 10x over, in the first year.

But its not STAR. e.g. you can see whats wrong with an ABC strut; heights, faults pressures, fault codes etc. But you cant make the car go into rodeo mode to do an ABC flush.

I wont do any heavy maintenance, that for my trusted Indy. But its a great pre diagnostic tool to work out what may be wrong.
My 2 Indys are a long way from me, so essential in working out what work I might need, helps ascertain likely repair costs, and what parts they may need to pre order in ( having an old car, a fair few things are pre order in) . E.g. diagnosing a failing strut, how serious it is like just a heavy misting but the ABC pressure was still excellent ... so I have confidence driving it there.

It also helps me do little jobs like diagnosing a fried wing mirror heater. And on the other side a weird fault on the mirror leds ( they all worked but were exceedingly dim ).
Also useful when my unqualified repair is finished ... peace of mind to see all the fault codes disappear and be able to clear them myself.
Lovely seeing no fault codes lol :)

I unfortunatel got an intermittantly defective, genuine new MB battery.
You could see all the voltages, on all the modules failing with ‘under voltage faults’ .. 5 pages!
When they went undervoltage they would not shut down properly, resulting in a current drain of nearly 8 amps! After replacing battery they all could be cleared, except 3 that needed individual clearing to end with no fault codes.

In summary lots of peace of mind.

Also invaluable buying a car, it could identify areas you specifically want your Indy to look at in a pre purchase inspection.

My only slight critisism is the manual is pants, you need to know what you have to look at.
If I were the sales Director I would commission a bunch of U Tube videos to show just what is possible. Reckon one could increase sales 10 fold!

BTW its very well built, solid heavy duty bit of kit. Far better built than I expected for £135.
Plus every user I have met, loves theirs!

Thanks everbody I just bought the Ebay reader. I have an intermittent side light fault on my W204 so I have a little job for it as soon as it arrives. Has anybody used them on other makes or is it just MB. (some people are never satisfied):)

The MB-II has the ability to read generic codes on any OBD-II vehicle but will not give the detail it can for MB vehicles (airbag reset for example, transmission data etc). Generic codes only tend to cover emission related and engine codes.

LK is correct. The 980 works on other makes, but it's just like a regular £15 OBD reader. you can turn the Engine Check light and that's about it.

I have it. Its a decent piece of kit. You can use it as a generic code reader for other makes too.
