W211 - 4 Matic fitted with Continental TS830P Winter tyres. A fantastic car.

Nothing will stop you on ice, but good driving will reduce the risks. (Even from the other guy....)

But what is the best way of keeping the speed under control on the descent?
I have tried two techniques and both work but has anyone any better idea. The Owners Manual advises not to change down on slippery surfaces and this is good advice. However on the 4-Matic the risk of skidding is certainly less.
The classic way is to change down early.
The other is to select the required speed with the Tempomat.

Braking on pure ice with a 10% slope, the car stops slowly. The excellent electronics keep the car on a straight line.
With steeper slopes, I can imagine that nothing will stop other than chains (or an anchor???)
