how much different is the 170 to the 171 dimensionally (i know its different in appearance) because there was an SLK 55 AMG so, if the 171 was essentially a 170 with a facelift and better trim etc, it may just be a case of source the parts and in it goes! (at least for the engine)

personally, id love to see an AMG V8 engined car hooked up to a manual gearbox and a LSD, just for the hell of it! something like a 204, with a LSD, manual gearbox and a 63 kompressor engine! or even a V12 biturbo (instead of the V8, if it will physically fit in the engine bay)

now THAT would be a project! i would attempt it myself, if i had the funds to do so!

Hi pete whilst running a compressor v8 would be the ultimate dream :D the sheer cost of the parts would for me make it unrealistic an engine alone is 3k upwards!!! i would be looking at buying a damaged CL etc as a doner :D

Thanks!

This has been a superb thread... I don't know how you found the time to post as well as doing all the work.

Congratulations - well done on a cracking job!

Only just caught up with the latest in this thread... What an unbelievably astoundingly stupendous job you've done, I can hardly believe it's the same car.:cool::shock::cool: Looks superb!! Hope your missus likes it, and enjoyed her birthday surprise. (I must say, mine would have divorced me half way into the project, for disappearing on a 'secret mission' - yours is clearly a very understanding lady!)

An earlier comment here was something along the lines of 'why buy a wreck for your wife's 50th', and yes it would have been easier to just walk into a dealers and buy something new, but I think going through what you have done sends such a different message.

Hope you got a 'proper' thank-you for all your efforts, you definitely earned it! :)

Lay in tomorrow......... had a few too many sherberts & as i posted to mark looking into a V8 R170 conversion with obligatory photos of course and maybe a lairy paint job but definately not in 11 days!!!!!!!!!!:lol:

You could (if it's a kompressor engine) remove the supercharger and replace it with a turbo - the kompressor engine is good for 400 bhp ;)

Thanks, she absolutely loves the car i keep catching her looking at it on the drive!!!!.......did a 200 mile round trip M25/M11 yesterday & boy did Tinkerbelle get some looks!!.......as for the comment of buying a wreck... this is a very personal thing for me to give Jackie " Her Dream Car! " in the same way a hand written card means more than a moonpig one (although they dont take 11 days to get there!!) i'm sure most of you would agree Happy Wife = Happy Life...........:D:D

I saw an SLK identical to Tink (pre facelift) on Sat, really made me think about how much work you put in.

I think the most noticeable difference for me was the headlights, the new ones make it look so much more modern.

WOW what a project and timescale That is a unique car now you cant buy that, its your time skill and taste that has defined it The grille & lights really set the front off and the colour great too see a Benz that isnt Silver or Black
They look OK in silver or black but there are soooo many of them
minimal cost project as well what was the total spend including purchase?
You must be very proud of the result.

Talk about a labour of love. Absolutely brilliant.
You are to be congratulated for completing it in such a short time scale.
You have one lucky and hopefully grateful wife.
