Hi,

I am looking to identify a Mercedes SLK 230 1998 part.
We cannot find it in the parts sheet.

Can anyone recognise it from a photo, it would be much appreciated.

It runs from the brake pedal mechanism to the underside of the lock/key barrel.

Thought it was stopping the key turn, but it just stops the key coming out, if the brake is not pressed.

Thank you

The real problem is set out below, but trying to order this part, at this stage

Lost cruise control, central locking playing up then brake lights went weird, one side and boot light staying on, then we couldn't turn key to undo steering lock and start car. Might be the barrel, but not sure yet as it was fine before)

Not fixed, but broke the end of this part, so need to get a new one anyway.

Is there any water of damp in the PSE pump

Cjecking PSE pump, would electrics effect key in ignition

Thanks Television, you are a Star.

We have sourced that part from a dealer.

Thank you for the suggestion on the real problem.

I took a look at the PSE pump and it looks dry.
Desperate to use the car, so trying to get geared up, to take it apart.

My message was misleading in that it's not the 'boot light', but the brake light on the boot (third brake light on the boot lid), that started to stay on.

I am keen to understand if it could be electrics (wet PSE pump) that would stop us unlocking the steering and turn the key in the ignition (tried 2 keys and 1 credit card one).

Would a bad PSE pump effect the cars ignition turning?

(With no prior difficulties, We had just changed the real light cluster, it was OK when I parked it the day before)

Or it is a separate problem (going to take apart the PSE pump)

Really appreciate an idea before we start cutting the lock off.

Been trying to work out how to summarise the problems.

Symptoms before the ignition problem:
- 'boot' third brake light suddenly staying on
- And the left hand side brake light stayed on
- Our cruse control stopped working about a year ago.

Since then:
- Locking the car suddenly becoming intermittent (keys showing led light, so work)
- indicators going off occasionally (similar to Hazards but a different blinking rate)

Undid the battery, and once reconnected:
- it went loopy, 'Turn Signal Relay' (002 542 21 19) clicking like mad
- then nothing (no central locking, pressing key fob does nothing)

It certainly looks like a PSE pump for some issues, but keen to check if that would it also potentially stop the key turning in the ignition.

(thought it was the STEERING LOCK CABLE (A 170 290 06 85), not releasing key to turn or something (hence I broke it!), but nothing under the barrel appears to control the key

We are in Spain at the moment and want an idea before giving it to dealer with an open chegue (providers here are often costly, unreliable and difficult to predict, they just rack up fees as they 'have a go').

Everything electrical could be a red herring, if it cannot effect turning the key and unlocking the steering lock :)

Seen other parts associated with symptoms:
- Transponder Ring around the Cylinder
(not sure if it's involved in releasing ignition somehow)
- 'Drive Authorization System' (DAS)
(Not sure if my 1997 SLK 230 has one), - 'Electronic Ignition System EIS'
- 'Brake Switch'
(gearing linked to pedal looks like it sticks, but may supposed to work that way)

An idea if electrics are in anyway involved with the key turning, or they are nothing to do with it, would be much appreciated. Though sadly, it would mean cutting off our lock!

We can then focus on electrics, for the other issues, once we move the car

(it's getting bumped to hell, as they try to park in the small space in between it and another car that hasn't moved! Several have tried pushing it back with their car, to make more space.)

Thank you

Lesley

if the key will not turn you have a mechanical fault with the key/barrel/ignition lock assembly - it is all mechanical as you can see.

key/barrel/ignition lock assembly : all mechanical

Thanks Alex, much appreciated.
key/barrel/ignition lock assembly : all mechanical

We feared that was the case, but forums appeared to link the ignition problem with others that were electrical...

and couldn't bring ourselves to believe/understand that the damn thing had just suddenly stopped turning
(having just replaced the back light cluster, it was all playing with our heads!)

Have tried the typical things to get the keys we have, one unused from new, to turn

Looks like the worst case scenario of cutting the steering lock/barrel off, as key wont turn and a costly nightmare.

Then we will have to look at the electrics, for the other issues!

She was fine when we parked her up, other than no 'cruise control'

nuts! :)

Thanks a million again for your help, much appreciated.
