idle Problems

I have just sold my 1991 e250 d and brought a 1991 230ce coupe, which are both from the 124 series. But it does not want to idle when its cold, and when it warms up a bit it will idle but only just. It will sit roundabout 7; some times it will keep flicking between 5, and 11. Other times it will just keep dieing although it has kept running lately. It has the Bosch cis-e (ke-jetronic) fuel injection system with the idle micro switch. Has anyone got any idea what the problem could be?
Thanks Dean.

Not at all familiar with your model, If it's got one have you tried cleaning out the throttle housing with carb cleaner? As it sounds abit like the air bleed bypass is clogged, possibly from the engine breather. I had this once with my old Pug 205Gti and the idle was all over the place until I cleaned it out.

Could possibly be a defective air flow meter or a air leak on the manifold. Try spray carb cleaner around your manifold joints etc, if you've got a leak it will draw it in and temp.raise your idle speed.

Not sure if thats your prob, but it's a start.........

Yours could be the one with the rotary idle adjuster

should be 12 ohms between 1 & 2 and 2 & 3

If no rotary idle then you have a screw (fat flat blade) under the air box

Please post back if you have a rotary idle

Check the air pipes which come off the rocker cover to the idle control.

OK to test this, and this is from Auto Data.

Disconnect rotary idle adjuster plug connector

Connect a 12 supply to the rotary idle adjuster and briefly earth each idle adjuster. An audible buzz should be heard or vibration from the valve

Thank you all for your help so far, I have not had a chance to look at the car over the weekend but will do as soon as I can, and take a photo of the idle too. Many thanks dean

I have had a chance to take a look. All the pipes look ok. I Sprayed carb cleaner all round, but no change in revs, I took a look at the rotary idle but when I pulled the plug off there only seemed to be two pins? So I have taken a photo, I hope that it will be some
help. Dean.

After using lots of injector cleaner things have changed, when you start the car it will not idle, you have to keep your foot on the throttle then put it in drive and go. Once you have gone down the road a bit and stop it will idle, round about 7, and when out of gear or in park it will idle round about 11. But if you turn the engine off for a few moments and then restart it, it will not idle again, this happens cold or hot, two miles or twenty?
