Okay, something i was thinking about recently as my son has just bought his first motorbike and is doing his CBT etc. If I were to join him as I have provisional back on my licence again what make and model of bike would I get. Obviously ‘the Dream’ would be a Mercedes Benz bike!! However as M-B don’t make motorised bikes, I cannot. So has anyone ever bought the Equivalent to a M-B in the bike world and if so what would it be?

In this day and age as long as you buy a known brand name then you cant really go wrong as bikes are very reliable..
Ive got a 20 yr old Suzuki for green laning and after 9 years it has never missed a beat !
The "prestige" bikes are all large powerfull machines so you cant ride one until you've a full license.

Can you even jump onto a large bike after taking your test these days .... aren't you limited to a lower powered bike for a certain time?
I passed mine Nov 1981  in Dunfermline so have no idea how it works these days.

This mine though it doesn't really get used any more but I'm loathe to part with it.

I have a Honda CBR 600 I bought new in ‘93. Still one of the best all round bikes ever made. I’ve kept it as I’ve not found anything I like more. I’ve other bikes as well and they’ve come and gone but the CBR stays. Ducati and BMW are very good at what they do but tend to be focused (I’ve had a few of both) the CBR just does everything so well.

It's a TDM 850 ..... as it says on the side of it ;) ;) Bought because it's relatively slow & it's a more up right sitting position.

With a full car licence I believe that you can sit your CBT and ride a 125 , on L plates , but you must sit the full bike test OR re-take another CBT before the 24 month deadline has expired.

Any of the main bike manufacturers are a safe bet regarding reliability but if you intend to sit your full test then why not just do one of the direct access courses that will get you onto a "big" bike straight away , all-be-it one with a restricted motor.

Then after a while you can move onto :

Or if you fancy having a race with a Veyron to the ton then:

i think there is still the direct access route .test taken on a 600. i did that once on a hired test bike .it stalled when i slowed to make the u turn ,that was it! as put foot down to prevent bike going over ,foot down ,fail. now use my foreign license as only ride maybe 3 months of yr ,been doing so for 40 yr . all over europe .no accident or fall.so far ! so i guess despite shite uk test regime i must be fairly safe. run the gsx1400 and ducati 748r
