It looks like my ignition switch is about to pack in judging by the miscellaneous faults it is displaying at the moment.

Does anybody have any experience of changing the unit and the costs involved and is it better left to MB to do the job?

Hello malcom, they are a plug in unit that you can do yourself. normal faults with the switch are, intermitant wipers,HRW,dash warning lamps not coming on and car not starting. Many people take them to pieces and open up and clean the contacts with complete success. you do not have to disturb the coil on the outside of the switch.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for the quick response.
I have just talked to MB parts and they inform me the IG is on the shelf at £308 inc VAT and that it has to be fitted in a MB workshop, obviously at extra cost.

I was told that fitment by them was necessary because MB send a special programming key to the dealership to program the new IG.

Any views on this?

I always thought that the contact parts of the switch were the same, as on E class, On all of the ones on here and other forums the the inducer coil for key recognition has been seperate from the contact part. Let me have the first 6 figures of VIN and I will look up the service sheet. What are the symptons on the car, an aerosol switch cleaner may solve it.

VIN No.210226

The symptoms are as you mentioned in your earlier post, no ignition lamp, then no glow plug lamp and today car failed to start on first attempt. Everything else is OK.

Hello Malcolm, There is only one sheet on the switch, its nothing like that I have seen before.. I would think that it is possible to spray some cleaner into it, If you would like a can, free of charge, no problem, I can send you one.

please E mail me at. m.watford@homecall.co.uk , and I will send you the work sheet.

In response to my enquiry about fitting a new IS the dealer confirmed a fitted price of £408 but also recommended a diagnostic as well at £100 pounds plus.

The switch seems to have settled down to working properly now so when I get the chance I will take malcolm's advice and spray some switch cleaner into it. Hopefully that will clean the contacts.

Is it just me or do dealers appear to be on another planet. It seems to me that they must be because they don't seem to know anything about common faults, or is that a way of making more money, lol.

Incidentally, has anyone fitted a more expensive IS? This one must take the prize!

HI

what switch have you got on your car is it a traditional key and lock (DAS 2) or an electronic ignition switch (EIS or DI (diagnostic interface) DAS 3)
from the prices quoted I guess you are on DAS 3 you can order the EIS as code 26 (pre coded) and order a green key seperate and do the job yourself
but I wouldn't recomend it

The EIS is the CAN gatway between chassis CAN and Interior CAN faults with this kind of ignition switch are not similar to the traditional switch, I would recomend a diagnostic by MB, If you book the car in for new EIS and they fitt it and it doesn't fix the fault thats down to you 400 quid thrown away.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
On a previous Volvo I owned, the lamp in a seat switch went. Volvo quoted me £25 for a replacement.

I went to Maplin, bought a £0.06 bulb, took the switch apart, soldered the new bulb in, and it was good as new.

Dealerships are fitters, not technicians.

Finally had to have a new switch fitted today (sorry EIS module). It was getting to the point where it was taking 5 or so attempts to start the car. New switch fitted this morning and so far so good.

Malcolm if you PM me your address I will post the old EIS module to you. I know you can't wait to get your hands on one.
