Hi
Me again I have bought a 1982 107 sl500 as a project that has a few probs.

Does anyone have an idea how I can do my ignition timing. I had to renew the water pump which was not as easy as first thought. To do this I removed a fair amount of fixings.
Firstly I removed the distributor because one of the bolts was behind it, I scored a line down it so I could put it back in the same position. However I had major probs in removing the crankshaft pulley which also had to come off, and of course I rotated the crank a few times.
Please help in easy terminology how to put the distributor back in the right place.

Thanks

Pete

Remove the drivers rocker cover & set the engine to TDC with the engine firing on no.1 (both no.1 cam lobes up & both valves closed). There is a notch in the front of the cam which lines up with a mark on the front cam carrier.
Next-take a look at the top lip of the dizzy body (under where the dirt shield sits). You should see a line across it (a bit like a chisel mark). This is no.1 firing position. When the dizzy is pushed fully in to the timing chest the outer electrode of the rotor arm should be pointing towards this mark.
At this point you should be able to line up your marker lines & you should be back where you started.

Set the crank shaft to the markings ( somewhere near the 10º BTDC) Insert the distributor with the rotor arm pointing at number 1 cylinder and try it, if it dies not fire up, put the timing marks up again, so that the distributor is pointing to number 1, remove the distributor again, rotate the engine 1 turn line up the timing ,marks again and put the distributor back, and try it. One way it will run.

Do you know how to set up the distributor ? With the engine set on the timing mark and the distributor in, turn on the ignition, rotate the distributor clockwise so that the points are closed, then turn it anticlockwise slowly till the points open and you see or hear the spark.

Once up and running do it on a strobe with the vacuum pipe removed

Sorry TV,but they have electronic ignition.
The reason for removing the rocker cover is that it is possible to get the crankshaft damper on out of line.If you are certain that it has been refitted correctly, just take a peek through the oil filler to make sure that no.1 is on its firing stroke.

Even with electronic ignition, you still rotate the distributor so that it just fires when the timing mark are lined up.

My way was with the rocker cover on
