Immobiliser problem C200 1997 W202

I have had trouble with the central locking/immobiliser in the past but this time it is proving impossible. The vehicle central locking is working AOK but the red light does not go out even though I have resynchronised and renewed the batteries in the key fob. As a result I am unable to start the vehicle. I am over 150km from the nearest MB dealer so its a bit of a pain. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob.

Is the Red light, when on, an indicator that the alarm / immobiliser is armed or is there some other Red light?
Describe what type of remote fob you have and do you have a spare?

Thanks for the prompt reply. The red light flashing is on the rear view mirror and indicates to me the the immobilser is still active. The fob is the type shown in the pictures as the 1994 flip out type.

Try Disconnecting the battery for 5minutes

Will the key pass the digital camera test above?
If not, then you may have a faulty remote fob.

If you open the remote, watch out for any small lose components that can drop out.
