My wife 2009 SLK has corroded rear brake pipes for about 4 inches where they connect to the wheels. Do the complete brake pipes need to be replaced or could a portion be removed from each pipe and an in-line brake connector fitted and a new piece put in? The rest of the pipes looks as new. Is there any difference in brake efficiency doing this?

It's perfectly acceptable as long as it's done perfectly. The problem you have is finding a tool that is good enough to flare the old steel pipe while it's on the car, especially the plastic coated type. I never found a hand held tool that did it properly on every type of car. Usually they either slip or form a poor flare.

As above. U can use proper vice based flarer. If you can u clip enough pipe to get in flarer without bending the pipe.

Me -2019 GLC 350 coupe AMG line. Mrs- 1.2 vauxhall Corsa 2021 ,orange with a black roof. .
My 2004 e320 had both rears done this way , the lad took the pipe back about 3 foot so the join was in a place he could work on it easily. That car had sbc which is very high pressure . I never had any issues or noticed any braking fade.

Perfectly acceptable method or repair. If done properly. I don't reccomend halfrauxs type China rubbish flaring tool sommat like this if you can get access u wud have to devise a way to support it. Whilst you pull the lever to effect the flare, don't forget to place fitting on pipe 1st. Screenshot_20220902_104048_com.huawei.browser.jpg

Not cheap those kits, When I did my e200T I removed the entire brake lines then afterwards thought, 'I should have cat and made a joiner section'
The brake lines went over the diff housing and it was going to be a major mission to install the new ones, however the garage made the lines up for me and to my surprise they were copper. easily feed through the top of the axle and shaped at the same time it saved me the trouble of dropping the rear axle out.
So they are not too bad to replace if they're copper.
I am in the throws of having to replace the steel lines on my XM which are the suspension ones, 3.5mm pipes and the tool I need is as expensive as the one above's thread, I was looking to cut out the rusted pipe and join it. I think in my case it might be just as easy to replace the entire lines.........If I can access them without having to remove the engine, rear axle, exhaust and so on................................
