Indicator/wiper stalk

Hi Forum,

W202, C250, 1995

Ive got a problem with the Ind./Wip. stalk, when I wiggle it the wipers do 1 or more sweeps. Its probably due to a leak between contacts in the switch assembly. Has anyone stripped & cleaned one before? I did an identical repair on the stalk on a Peugot 405 some time ago, it was fairly easy. I,ll have to take the airbag & steering wheel off to get the stalk off. Odd thing about this car, the steering column is fixed, not adjustable. Surprising on an Elegance.

C-Class cars didn't get adjustable steering columns until the facelift in '97.

Wipers work on their own

Just had this done on a 95 W124:

* new stalk £35 + VAT, Mercman
* diagnosis & fitting about £80, Car Electrics Brighton

I thought it was the multifunction relay but no

i had the same problem with mine if i remember right the end of the stalk 'pops' off 2 reveal the contacts i cleaned mine with a fine nail file

watch out for the spring and ballbearing when stripping

Your right, the cap at the end of the ind stalk comes off, although I had to prise it off with a broad screwdriver blade. I squished the white switch section with "servisol" switch cleaner, Its now OK, It was sometimes starting the int. wipe when in the off position. A lot easier than pulling the air bag,wheel etc. Ive attached a pic to show others how easy it is.
