I agree, I can't see how a failed battery will cause the rear to drop.

It is most likely a leak in the air lines or the suspension units leaking.
Cold weather seems to cause the air suspension units to leak more. Maybe that is why they leak some days and not others?

You could put soapy water on the air lines to see if you can see any leaks. They would cheap to fix but might be tricky to find as they route behind the under body plastic covers.
The air suspension units are about £400 for two (non-MB). Replacing them is DIYable.

The pump must be OK if it is raising the car. It is probably working overtime now so might fail if left to work so hard.

Not a DIY job for me unfortunately. I'm hopeless!
Managed to get booked in for Tuesday with a specialist so hopefully it'll be a simple fix.
Lines were supposedly replaced in July last year but the exact same issue has reoccurred. Hoping it's down to that. Maybe a poor repair/connection.

This morning it hadn't dropped. Compressor kicked in after start as always does due to air release when locking up.
Sounded like a gulping noise as if it was struggling to move air. Odd!
