I will shortly be leaving my company car scheme and buying the E280 CDi I have been driving since new three years ago.

Having never had to buy insurance for 20 odd years, any advice on who to go to?

Especially interested in how to overcome lack of provable no-claims, and anyone who specialises in MB.

I am 44 and live in West Mids.

What you should do is contact your internal fleet department and get them to produce a letter for you showing how many years you have been driving your company car without accidents.
Alternatively if either your company driving history is not that good or your fleet department are not able to write you a letter, then if you have been a named driver on another policy some insurance companies will credit you with the relevant number of years NCB.

Can confirm Blobcats view I obtained a letter, after 10+ years of driving a lease car, from my employers The insurance company allowed me 7years, I asked why only 7 and they increased it to 9 which was good enough.

Same for me.

Everybody seems to use different companies - but I got a good quote, and, in my opinion, a high quality policy, from Frizzell (aka Liverpool Victoria).

Just had an interesting chat with Frizzel. I've been with them since I bought the C back in '98. Their renewal this year was £650. I popped my details into money supermarket and it came back with many around £400-£500 and one at £416.
So just before I applied, I called Frizzell. They mucked about on the system and got it down to £577 and then admitted that they were a bit heavy this year, but for "valued Customers" they had some lattitude for this year only and charged me £416! When we went through the details, the Frizzell policy was actually better than the one they matched against, with a guaranteed no claims against a protected one and business cover automatically included.
Sadly, I suspect a new customer may not be so lucky.

The internet search engines are the best place to start, (saved £250 on the Wifes policy this year by switching to Sainsburys) though i found with several that once I'd filled in ALL the boxes, their online system didn't quite match the quote I'd initially seen.

I am searching for insurance these days as well due to "norwich union" not quoting me happy on my renual quote . around £950 with 8 years no claim bonus discount and 9 years of driving. tesco and privilege website quotes it for £285 .... a huuuuuuge difference :) but they want a tracker to be fitted in car...otherwisse it wont be covered against theft.
Havnt contacted them yet, but was wondering, if they would take that cheap GSM tracking device selling on ebay for around £50 as acceptable tracking device?! GPS tracking device i came across on web is around £300 ... dont think should be spending that much on a w208 CLK :?:
other searches on web has given a quote of around £500 (without tracker) ... confused if i should just get a tracker fitted as it will save me on insurance next year as well (and if i sold the car, can transfer tracker to next car)

When I bought the 320CDi the insurers I was with then (Admiral) were totally uncompetitive on the change over from the 300TE. I then trawled the system and ended up with insurance through M&S. Ther quote was by far the cheapest when you factor in the complete RAC cover (I was able to suspend my RAC membership while I am with M&S) which is included I am probably winning out to the tune of about £100 p.a.

There is also the added bonus of paying with your M&S credit card (might be double points, not sure) and being covered for loss of ignition keys to the tune of £1000.

Very pleased so far, but havn't and hope not to experience what they are like on a claim. I wouldn't think they are any worse than the rest.

I was with MB insurance for about 5 years until they changed underwriters and decided to provide comical renewal quotes.

Thanks for that - I've just had the renewel on my wife's Jazz and it's £100 less than last year, but I put that down to the fact that it has the kids on it and the youngest is now 21. Maybe I'll run it through a quote system to check it's there or thereabouts. ;)

I guess the 'new customer' wouldn't be a customer if they quoted almost £200 dearer and would just go elsewhere. They quoted me a ridiculous price for house contents insurance - twice what I was getting elsewhere.

I do feel happy with them though - UK call centre, they don't care about speeding penalty points, full cover for factory fitted equipment, automatic courtesy car cover etc. They handled a little claim on the Jazz this year when someone ran into the back of us and it couldn't have been easier.
