haha reminds me of a time way back repairing rust on an old mk3 3 escort.
One of the rear wheel arches had gone and I ran out of steel sheet to weld in.
So I used the top metal casing from an old front loading vhs player.
Probably thicker and better quality steel.
The problem was the logo stamped in to the top which could still be faintly seen even after filling and painting.
As for the radiator fix - coffee grounds?
Wrong!
Everyone knows that the correct fix is egg white in via the radiator cap!
Some fixes are done just to get you home.
You'd need a pretty Amazonian lady to use a pair of tights instead of a fan belt nowadays.
Although I did once uses a good length of twine looped through the cabin to keep a windscreen wiper going after the mechanism broke on a Series III Landrover, boy did my passengers arms get tired. We also had to untie it before we could get out!
he should have used radwelt...used that on my last w124 and lasted 18 months and 25k miles until a bigger hole sprang up somewhere else on the radiator. Viscous coupling then needed replacing soon after...something i've lived without on the current w124 for 2 years and 30k miles by simply using the heater and fan and aiming vents out the window in heavy traffic or steep slow ascents.
34 degrees in italy, stuck in traffic for 4 hours, max speed 5mph, coolant temperature below 95 degrees all the time.
my sat nav also hangs on the central vents (better than falling off the windscreen with the rubbish suction pad) by a metal coathanger bent into shape with pliers.
i remember all the wiring to the radio being intermittent on my old rover ..being a student and needing music, simple, just solder on the radio power wire to the fuse for the sidelights and drive round with sidelights on to operate the radio
not enough of a make do and mend society IMO, too much health and safety this and throw away that.
