Injector leak?

I've been hearing a chuffing noise and a smell of burnt diesel. After the removal or the black cover it appears one of the injectors is is leaking. someone has poured a black sealant all around this injector suggesting that it has leaked before. Is this just a case of a seal gone? or do I maybe need a new injector. Sorry the car's a 2000 320 CDi. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums Paul.

It's not black sealant, it's carbonised diesel.

It will only get worse, and the sooner you can get the injector re-sealed, the cheper it will cost. The parts (washer and bolt) are pence. Labour varies depending on how easily (or not) they come out.

If you tell us where you are based, we may be able to point you in the direction of a good specialist.

The injector is now out, didn't find no seal! Is that maybe all it needs?

I live in Surrey so if you know a local specialist that would be handy. this is just one of a few problems I'm having at the moment!

It's a copper seal on the base of the injector. If it's not on the injector, it's still down the hole. You'll need to have the seat cut to stand any chance of getting a good seal.

Can't think of a specialist in Woking, someone here will suggest one soon. Nearest I can think of is SS Motors in Weybridge.

What are the other problems?

Please be aware we are finding cars with partially blocked cats suffer worse.

Also the carbonised diesel can damage the seal/injector plug. We replace these if especially bad.

As stated you need to properly clean out every bit of this. And make sure you get the washer out.

The bolt is a stretch bolt so needs replacing

Also retap the thread for the retaining bolt, as if you try to tighten bolt without doing this you will just strip the thread as the carbon builds up at the bottom of the hole.

As MBTW, make sure that the seat is clean (I suspect that the old seal is still down there), and that the bolt thread is clean. Also make sure that the bolt hole is clear, I have known an instance where a bit of muck was down the hole, and when the bolt was tightened it cracked into the water canal below.

Torque is 7nm +90 deg + 90 deg

Again (as MBTW) always use a new bolt/ washer (as its a stretch bolt)

There is a small MB specialist in Pontypridd called Stuttgart Garage - the guy really seems to know his stuff!

Just bought a CLK and was asking lots of advice before I bought it....will definitely be having my servicing done there.

They are on 01443-401838 - cheaper than Merc in Cardiff!
