Hi all!!
I`m looking to change my instrument cluster on a W140 S280.Can anyone tell me if it is a straightforward swap or does the new one "second hand cluster" have to be programmed in any way.My speedo is reading 135k and the replacement cluster is showing 100k.Reason for change - my cluster has a faulty fuel gauge which stays on the 3/4 mark regardless of amount of fuel and i replaced the fuel sender unit but its still faulty.so im thinking probably its the cluster. The other reason is i want to export the car to a country which uses KM not MILES and my current unit only shows MILES and it has no readings for KM on the dials. Please help....anyone??

Almost 100% sure your going to have to buy a NEW dash and get it coded up by STAR.

You can not reset the mileage to match yours with a 2nd hand cluster.

There is limited work that can be done on STAR with these cars,,but a late one you should be able to transfer the info over

In not really worried about matching the mileage because im exporting this car soon.I was hoping a straightforward swap would do the trick ,at least my fuel gauge will be okay. What might be the outcome if i just attempt to swap them without STAR??

On a W202 cluster it would be possible to swap over all 3 dials from a donor cluster, it would seem likely that the same could be done for your car, that remains to be seen, you would have to take the donor cluster apart to check if it is possible in your case.

Note how the milage clock is part of the PCB so the milage would remain untouched. The dials just unplug, 3pins.

If you are lucky and it is possible to do a swap, bear in mind that it’s a 50-50 chance, either the original dial is faulty OR the PCB is faulty.

There was (& still is) a HUGE recall to renew 220 & 215 dash clusters - under full warranty!!! Check yours is not one of them first. Recall fault was a totally blank dash, so tell them yours sometimes does this. Dealers "Should" be willing to help as they get paid by MB warranty anyway.
