I require to change an instument bulb in a 1998 SLK 230. No matter how many damn screws from the dash are removed, I cannot gain access to the rear of the panel (drivers display). The main dealer wants £110 for doing this, which for the sake of a small bulb is ludicrous in the extreme....

Any suggestions, or assistance gratefully received.

If you have an adjustable steering wheel its not to bad, If you have a non adjustable the wheel and air bag has to come off, before I go any further are you happy to go ahead.

Good morning Malcolm,
The steering wheel is, as dictated by Sod's Law, non-adjustable. I am however fairly familiar with spanners and associated devices so am quite prepared to give it a go.
Many thanks

If you are willing to give it a go ,see here; http://202tech.mkosonen.com/howtos.html ;as you can see it can be removed with the non adjustable wheel in place, but if you find it won't come out there is another link there on removing the steering wheel . Either way make sure the ignition is off or the battery is disconnected at all times.

Interesting to see that he scratched all of the dash in trying to get it out with the steering wheel in place.

Malcolm,
The work in the guide was done on a 1994 C280 with an identical dash and wheel to mine, and i can assure you that my instrument panel comes out without any damage. The 1998 SLK may be different, but in that case there is a guide on removing the steering wheel.
Cheers, Geo.:)
