I have just purchased a used E320 estate 2002 auto, the panel display for the gear selector ad outside temp gauge is broken up and unreadable, can these be repaired without buying a complete new instrument/speedo panel

Hi and welcome to the forum,

This is a very common fault on the W210 E class.

When mine started to play up I made an enquiry as to the cost of a new panel and it was in the region of £900, there is someone on the internet who can repair them for aproximately £250 but you will need to send it away for a few days which means you will be without a car.

It may be possible to pick one up from a breaker but it will probably have the same problem, however this would enable you to fit it temporarilly while you send your original for repair.

I chose to live with the fault even though it annoyed the life out of me every time I looked at the dash.

Apart from this you have chosen a very nice car but do look out for any rust around the wheelarches and tops of doors.
