I have this really frustrating problem. When I turn on the ignition, all of my instrument panel, the ventilation and the electric windows all work, as soon as I turn the engine over it all goes off. The only thing which works are the head lights and hazard lights. The battery is less than a year old and is lead acid. The engine and auto gearbox work fine. After half an hour of driving I can stop the engine and restart and it all comes to life. Can anyone point me in the right direction? This is a 2007 c220 estate.

Battery type shouldn't make that happen.
I had a Varta battery fail a few years ago at 1 month old so i would get it tested.

It was a suggestion only , but Might if it's fried . AGM batteries are fed with a higher charge rate alternator,it's probably just starting ,but holding no voltage to power things up. Just like the w211 used to say ' convienience functions disabled . Op have your battery tested if only just to rule it out . Also double check your reg to see if it should be an AGM not lead acid , or open the cells ,chances are they are bone dry ....

Sorry i know it was a suggestion i didn't mean you where wrong.
Some say AGM for a stop/start and lead for none s/s.
On other makes you have to code/register a new battery but not with MB.

Thanks. The battery is a year old. I'll have a look at the water.

So I finally got to the bottom of this and you won’t believe what it was. The battery checked out fine with the water level ok, the alternator output was perfect. Then completely by chance I couldn’t find my keys and used the spare. It worked. When I got home I found and tried the usual key, it didn’t work. Tried the spare again, it worked. Changed the batteries I. The original it still didn’t work. I can’t believe it, the amount of money I might have thrown at this problem and it was the key all along.

a CLS I owned once took a wobbler similar to your issues. The car would start , but wouldn't go into drive , error codes pointed to the gearbox immobilizer communication lost with ECU . I changed keys and it worked Instantly. Copy key £150 sorted it .

Thanks for clearing up the fault.
