Insurance on a test drive.

I have a dealer coming tomorrow to view and hopefully buy my car. What is the position regarding insurance if he wants to test drive the car ?
My insurers advise that the dealer should have third party cover only to drive any car but if he damages my car I would have to claim on my insurance. With decades of no claim discount I'm not prepared to risk that. Or am I being over cautious?

You drive it . Tell him why. I stopped a guy when selling a kia shortage for that very reason. He got a bit upperty at 1st but still bought it.

If he is a dealer, he may have a Traders policy which will cover him. Get him to prove it though.

As above, you drive it with him in the passeneger seat. What's he going to do that you can't do to evaluate the car.

(I once let someone drive a previous car for a test on a private sale. I don't think he knew how to operate the clutch in conjunction with the gearbox. Never again.)

I had a bloke once drop from 5th to 2nd in a 2.0 Toyota celica I was selling, I was furious and asked him wtf he was thinking about . I wanted to see if the rev counter would cut off the engine ... idiot!! Put me off for life..

I managed to put a hired Sierra (it was that long ago) into 1st from 5th at about 50mph ...... I wasn't used to these new fangled 5 speed manuals

If he is a dealer, he may have a Traders policy which will cover him. Get him to prove it though.

His insurance will only cover third party, not my car. I'll drive the car and if he objects then he'll be sent packing.

If he comes with trade plates then it should be covered under his trade policy - worth checking first though

Update.
Buyer arrived, briefly looked at the car, paid by bank transfer and once I saw funds in my account I handed the keys and off he went. No test drive. Took 20 minutes!
It was sold through wizzle at a higher price than private sale value as shown in Parkers.

If he is a proper he will have a trade policy, shouldn't be a problem

It was sold through wizzle at a higher price than private sale value as shown in Parkers.

There we go, all this worry for nothing

My mate went to view an XJ12, the guy gave him the keys and Frank drove off for his test drive solo. Out on the open road and hurtling around a sweeping bend Frank came up upon a flooded road, hydroplaned the Jag and ended up hitting a power pole. He rang the seller and said 'Bad news old chap, I've wrapped your Jag around a power pole' No insurance as this was in New Zealand where insurance isn't compulsory. Frank then said to the chap on the phone, 'There is good news though, I'll buy it for your asking price'
A quick phone to Franks son telling him I've bought another Jag, come and collect it with your recovery truck!!

Just thought I would mention this as you have now sold your car
