We are looking to import our 2017 C200 fitted with the Intelligent Light System into Spain, can anyone confirm if switching using the cluster menu to Right hand side driving gives a flat beam as required or just a low beam which will not pass the import test. My Mercedes dealer says it will be ok but the importer says it will not.

May not be the same on the car you are looking at but, my user manual says

(PS the "more" link seems to work for further reading).

Setting the dipped-beam headlamps for driving on the left/right

You can use this function to switch between symmetrical and asymmetrical dipped beam more.

  • The current setting Right-side traffic or Left-side traffic appears.

Press the

button to save the setting.
  • If you change the setting, conversion does not take place until the next time the vehicle is stationary.
If you set the dipped-beam headlamps for driving on the right/left, then motorway mode and the extended range foglamps are unavailable. These are only deactivated if the setting for driving on the left/right is set opposite to your vehicle's country version.
A qualified specialist workshop can set the dipped-beam headlamps for driving on the left/right.

Surely the flat, symmetrical beam, whether achieved via the dash cluster or via a lever inside the back of the head light is only good enough for when you go on holiday for a week or two .... it's not intended to make a RHD headlamp into a LHD headlamp

I think the op is moving the vehicle permanently!

That is the million dollar question, on the C200 with intelligent light system they are LCD units and i cannot get a clear answer from Mercedes on whether i will need to change the light units or not

I know .... he needs LHD headlamps & not RHD headlamps that have been altered via the dash cluster

Right and at the bottom of the instructions I posted it says :

"A qualified specialist workshop can set the dipped-beam headlamps for driving on the left/right."

I read that as being a more permanent change rather, than short term from the driver's seat / instrument cluster.

Sorry I missed that line having read the rest of your reply and going off to read the difference between Asymmetrical and Symmetrical , my apologies. By this do I read that a Mercedes dealership should be able to do this or i wonder what they mean by a qualified specialist workshop

LEDs with a flat beam would still be a few million times more useful than glow worms pointing at our pavement that were the std on this brand for the 50 years beforehand

Pretty standard for ALL brands. My Dad used to own a 1949 Triumph (Razor edged) Saloon (saloon version of the Roadster that Bergerac used to drive) The car still had it's original headlights, no idea what power rating they were but when on dipped beam the driver's head light, by design, went out & the reflector on the passenger side swivelled slightly to dip the beam to the kerb. He said they were dire ..... but there again the car didn't exactly go very fast - even flat out! :D

the tungsten filament lamps on my 78 MKI Cavalier weren't much better
